Alveda King Calls for Unity as MLK Day and Trump Inauguration Align

Dr. Alveda King, niece of iconic civil rights activist Dr. Martin King Jr., recently issued a call to unity among Americans in 2025 just days before MLK Day (Jan. 20), which is also the day the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is set to take place. King, a bestselling author and founder of Alveda King Ministries, called Americans to come together and support one another in recognition that "we are all one blood, one human race, from the womb to the tomb and beyond."

She noted how the month of January "marks a time of significant change and progress" for the nation, citing events including the annual March for Life, MLK Day, and the presidential inauguration. King also recognized how this month also saw the funeral of President Jimmy Carter, which was described as "an occasion honoring the end of a remarkable legacy.

"When peripherals collide, convergence is imminent," King stated in a press release"The convergence of these events cannot be just a coincidence, and January's March for Life, in particular, gives us a chance to reflect on the progress we have made in the movement."

King went on to invite Americans to pray for the nation in light of this "new season of promise."

"Through our prayers, our hope, and our continued hard work, we can finally rejoice that there is a light at the end of the tunnel."

At the close of her statement, King said that her ministries' KOINONIA outreach will donate 25,000 meals to Haiti in commemoration of MLK and what would have been her uncle's 96th birthday.

As reported by NPR, MLK's children have written posts on social media on how people observe inauguration day as it coincides with the federal holiday in their father's name.

Bernice King — King's daughter encouraged people to watch both, even if they're not fans of Trump.

"l certainly understand the desire to tune out rhetoric, ideology, and policies with which we passionately disagree and which contradict the spirit of the Beloved Community," she wrote on Instagram last month. "However, we must pay attention to what President-Elect Trump speaks on that day, even if by transcript and video later."

King's eldest son, Martin Luther King III, who previously endorsed Kamala Harris in the presidential election, posted an article regarding the overlapping dates and encouraged people to a "reflection to action."

"MLK Day is a reminder to move from reflection to action," King wrote on X. "My father's legacy was rooted in service and action. My mother envisioned a 'day on,' not off — an opportunity to serve and engage in building the Beloved Community."
