Christian Leaders Pray for Trump after 2nd Assassination Attempt

Prominent Christian leaders in the U.S. are calling for prayer, fasting, and enhanced Secret Service protection following a second attempt against former President Donald Trump last weekend. According to The Christian Post, Trump escaped an assassination attempt unharmed after the Secret Service opened fire on a man, later identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, who attempted to shoot the former president who was playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Despite initially escaping, a witness identified the license plate number of Routh’s getaway vehicle, and he was later arrested in Martin County, Florida.

The incident comes two months after the first assassination attempt on the Republican nominee for president’s life, when a gunman’s bullet grazed Trump’s ear when speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“It’s evening here in Rome, where I am, but the news is reporting that shots were fired in @realDonaldTrump’s vicinity in Florida,” The Rev. Franklin Graham, CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, wrote on X Sunday afternoon.

“There aren’t many details available yet, but as they try to determine what exactly happened, this is a strong reminder that we need to pray for this man,” Graham added.

The Rev. Johnnie Moore, who is the president of the Congress of Christian Leaders and was appointed twice as commissioner on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, also commented on the assassination attempt in a thread on X on Sunday: “A 2nd assassination attempt on President @realDonaldTrump, dear Lord! Thank God he is safe!”

He commended the Secret Service as “heroes,” adding that “A Secret Service agent saw the gun, acted quickly, and saved former President Trump’s life today, always willing to sacrifice their own lives!” Moore also insisted that “AMERICANS NEED TO DEMAND ANSWERS!”

“The gunman was stopped, but how could a gunman get this close to President Trump a second time?” he asked. “The gunman was quickly apprehended fleeing on the highway, but he also made it to his getaway vehicle! Democrat or Republican, no American should have to hear this story again. Every American should be irate.”

In a follow-up post, Moore called on President Joe Biden “to immediately order the same level of protection for former president @realDonaldTrump that he receives as the sitting President of the United States.”

His comment refers to the suggestion made by Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw that “we would have had this entire golf course surrounded” if he was the sitting president. He also noted that “because he’s not, security is limited to the areas the Secret Service deems possible.”

Moore argued that if additional Secret Service protection for Trump somehow requires congressional action, “that action should take place TOMORROW & the vote should be unanimous.” He concluded his statement by stating that “all former presidents” deserve Secret Service protection; Moore exclaimed, “THIS MUST NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.”

Worship artist and activist Sean Feucht called for “fast for America” in light of the second assassination attempt.

Talk is cheap, going online …and spouting rhetoric is cheap, posting Bible verses is cheap,” Feucht, well-known for hosting “Let Us Worship” rallies amid worship restrictions implemented during the COVID-19 lockdowns, said in a video on Instagram Sunday.

“We need to fast and pray,” he stressed. “I feel so stirred in my spirit to gather people across the world that will fast and pray with me for the next three days.”

In an X post on Sunday, Feucht credited “God’s divine protection” over Trump escaping an assassination attempt.

“Trump’s life was saved from one security guard seeing the muzzle of a gun through bushes and a chain-link fence!” he said.

Greg Laurie, senior pastor of the California-based Harvest Church, also addressed the issue Monday morning.

“Donald Trump has dodged a bullet — literally, once again! I truly believe that God extended His hand of protection over our former president, and I’m so thankful for that,” he said in a post on X.

Laurie also offered a call to action for the American people:

“The inflammatory rhetoric needs to be toned down, and we need a return to civility in our public discourse. Most importantly, America needs to turn back to God. Let’s also pray for the right person to be in the Oval Office and for God’s protection over everyone serving in elected office, regardless of whether we voted for them or not.”

In a statement shared with The Christian Post, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, said that the second assassination attempt against Trump is reflective of a “pivotal moment in our nation’s history.”

“This heinous act is not only an attack on another human being; it is an attack on the very values that characterize our democracy and undergird the freedoms we hold dear as Americans. Now, more than ever, we must band together to protect the freedom and unity so many have sacrificed to preserve. In this critical time, we lift our prayers for peace, unity, and healing across our land.”

He also shared a prayer that “together, we can overcome our differences and stand — arm-in-arm with our fellow Americans — against the forces of evil that seek to destroy this great country.”
