Country Singer Mickey Guyton Says Faith, Family Had Major Roles in Her Success

Grammy-nominated country artist Mickey Guyton recently spoke about how her Christian faith and family have helped her on her journey to stardom.

In a recent interview with The Christian Post, Guyton shared that she attended church twice a week while growing up in Texas and was part of the youth choir. In addition to her faith, she was inspired by famed country stars Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and LeAnn Rime and moved to Nashville at the start of her music career.

"[Faith] was a huge part of my life and always has been, and being in the industry that is so fickle, that is so hard — and especially the angle I took, I really like standing up for people, no matter who it is, anybody that felt marginalized, I'm standing up for them — that comes with a huge responsibility," she told the outlet.

"It was my faith in God that helped me. A lot of the things, that's my approach, I really believe He was speaking through me because there are some times I would hear interviews and I'm like, 'I don't recall saying that.' So, it was definitely an out-of-body experience sometimes," she said.

Last year, Guyton was named Time magazine's "2022 breakthrough artist of the Year," sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and became the first Black person to be nominated for Best Country Album in the history of the Grammys.

She was also the first black female artist to perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards, The Christian Post reports. She sang her song "What Are You Gonna Tell Her?" at the awards show.

Guyton says her husband and their 2-year-son keep her grounded amid her success.

"I couldn't stop the opportunities from coming into my life, and I think it was because of my son. God gave me him. He's such a precious kid, and seeing him smile every day … the world can be crazy around you. But the endorphins you get from just seeing your baby smile — there's nothing like it," she said. "The closest thing to God's love, in my personal opinion, is our love for our kids. And that grounds me for sure."

Recently, Guyton was part of the Apple TV+ show "My Kind of Country," a singing competition show in which the country star served as a scout, along with Jimmy Allen and Orville Peck, to find the next big star.

Micaela Kleinsmith, who comes from Cape Town, South Africa, won the singing competition series, was awarded $100,000 and received full support from Apple Music.
