During a recent episode of “The Deep End” podcast, award-winning Christian artist Lecrae shared how fellow artist, pastor, mentor, and friend Montell Jordan saved his marriage from divorce. “I remember being at a place where I was like, ‘I don’t think me and my wife are gonna make it. I think this is a wrap,’” Lecrae, who hosts the podcast, recalled. During that “dark” season, Lecrae turned to Jordan, whom he regards as his mentor. Jordan is best known for releasing his No. 1 hit song “This Is How We Do It” in 1995.
In 2017, Jordan and his wife, Kristin, co-authored the book This Is How We Do It: Making Your Marriage A Masterpeace and launched a ministry centered on seeing “men and women reconciled to Jesus, then reconciled to each other.”
According to Church Leaders, the couple came alongside Lecrae and his wife, Darragh, during their time of struggle.
“I heard you talk about divorce—about it being like a piece of paper that tears in half,” Lecrae told Jordan.
“If divorce is an option for you, you have too many options,” explained Jordan.
At the time, Jordan and Kristin shared their own life experiences, mistakes, and forgiveness in their attempt to help Lecrae and Darragh heal their marriage.
“A reconciled husband and wife make a stronger marriage; a stronger marriage makes a better family; stronger families make better churches; stronger churches make better communities and stronger communities make a better world,” the couple explained.
Later in the podcast, Jordan opened up about experiencing fame in the music industry and how God intervened in his life.
“I always felt like God had a leash on me,” Jordan told Lecrae.
Along with Kristin, another artist, and manager, experiencing success together “resulted in an unpredictable story where after two decades of world tours and millions of album sales, they chose marriage over music, faith over fame, and significance over success.”
After his first record, which featured “This Is How We Do It,” became a hit, Jordan shared how he tried to work harder to get to the next level.
He tried to “make something last forever, to get to the next.” Jordan continued, “I think we miss the now and what God is saying now—like in this moment.”
Jordan shared that God grabbed his attention when there was a fictitious report that he had died. Friends, family, and fans reacted to the news and only referred to Jordan as the “This Is How We Do It” singer. He then concluded that he wanted his life to mean more than his music career.
Jordan and Kristen took a break from the music industry and focused more on their marriage and ministry. They experienced several hardships in their marriage, including infidelity, bankruptcy, miscarriage, and so forth, and sought help from the Lord to guide them and restore their marriage.
“I had to learn who I was outside of music to determine that I make music and music doesn’t make me,” the artist told Special Olympics.
Jordan currently serves as a Champion Ambassador for the Special Olympics, where “faith, family, and music may intersect to not only support children with special needs but their families as well.” He and Kristen also support SONA and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
