Lenny Kravitz Dedicates 2024 VMA Win to Late Mother and Thanks Jesus

Singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz thanked Jesus Christ as he dedicated his win at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) to his late mother. As reported by Premier Christian News, Kravitz won Best Rock for his song "Human" during the ceremony at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Wednesday night.

In a preshow interview, Lenny dedicated the win to his mother, Roxie Roker, who passed away from cancer in 1995 at age 66.

"Wow. This is incredible. I am so grateful. Thirty-one years ago, my mother was with me at an award show, was at the VMAs, so I dedicate this to her," he stated. "I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life."

The rockstar also thanked his manager, publicist, and the director of the video for "Human," Joseph Kahn, for their support.

During the ceremony, Kravitz performed a medley of his greatest hits, including the 1993 classic Are You Gonna Go My Way, while wearing silver trousers and a white feather boa. He then transitioned to his latest single, Human, and concluded with Fly - a remix of his 1998 hit Fly Away - in which he was joined onstage by Migos star Quavo.

In a post on Instagram last week, Kravitz shared a clip of attending the 1993 MTV VMAs with his mother, who was perhaps best known for playing the role of Helen Willis on the sitcom The Jeffersons.

"Having my beautiful mother by my side at my first #VMAs 31 years ago is a moment I will always cherish," the 60-year-old wrote in the caption. "I'm looking forward to taking the stage all these years later where she will be in my heart."

According to People, Kravitz is expected to launch his Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in October and will play five nights of what he considers to be a "celebration of life, music, love, of rock 'n' roll."

"We've been on tour. We started this summer in Europe, so this show is together," he said in the preshow interview. "We're there to amplify love. We're there to exchange energy with the audience. It's very free. And it's all about the energy and the exchange of love. And all the hits!"

He released his latest album, Blue Electric Light, in May and said at the VMAs that his artistry is like that of a painter.

"I play whatever I have to play. I play all the instruments on most of the songs, and Craig Ross also plays guitar on a few songs," he explained. "That's the way I've always done it. I feel like I paint; I'm a painter. I paint with sound ...I had great examples like Stevie Wonder and Prince, so that's the school that I come from."
