Will Smith Reflects on Finding ‘Only God Is Left’ after Fame and Fortune

Actor Will Smith opened up about his personal journey of self-discovery and faith in a recent podcast interview with Christian rapper Lecrae. During the interview, Smith shared that he had to learn to "trust himself and God" and acknowledged that he had felt an emptiness despite his fame and success, Premier Christian News reports.
"It is such a rare gift to reach the end of the material world...to reach the end of money where you can buy anything you want. Whereas buying things used to scratch an itch... to have had all the sex you want to have. How many more number-one movies do I need? How many more Grammys? It's a rare gift to get to the end of the material world where only God is left," Will told the rapper on his "Deep End With Lecrae" podcast.
According to Christian Today, Smith added that he hopes that everyone else would realize that nothing satisfies the human soul no matter what they try to pursue as a means of fulfillment.
"There's no country you can go to. There's no relationship you can start. No new job that's going to do it… You get to the end of it. It's excruciating, but I would wish that on everybody. I wish everybody could get everything they want to see that it doesn't satisfy.
Although Smith is not a professing Christian, he was raised in a Christian household and was particularly raised Baptist. Nowadays, he describes his religion as "love" and has previously explored a variety of religious traditions.
Smith, who rose to fame in his 90s sitcom, "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," as well as his role in Independence Day, received widespread backlash in 2022 after slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars after he told a joke about his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith's lack of hair. He was consequently prohibited from going to the Oscars for ten years.
Smith, recently released his first full album in 20 years titled Based on a True Story. Songs on the album, such as The Reverend and You Can Make It include music from a Sunday Service Choir.
