Even through Dementia One Special Phrase Kept a Grandmother Connected to Her Husband

Diagnosed with dementia in 2021, Dorothy faced the heartbreaking reality of forgetting faces and places she held dear. But no disease could erase the love shared with Merv. Whenever he whispered their phrase, she never missed her cue: “And to the moon!”

Their Granddaughter Captured The Couple’s Beauty Through Dementia

Their granddaughter Bridgette captured the sacred beauty of this connection in a video that has touched millions, 6.1 million to be exact. Captioned, “One thing dementia didn't take away from her was her love for him. She was able to say this one her last days. This is what true love looks like. Forever thankful, he loved her through her hardest days.”

It wasn’t just a phrase; it was a lifeline–a tether to the heart of the one who had loved her through every high and low over a lifetime.  Bridgette said the phrase was born from a spontaneous moment a decade earlier when the musical Guys and Dolls came on the radio and became their anthem of devotion.

She recalled, “They started singing it often, and it started from there. It just became another way that they told each other how much they loved each other.” She added, “Merv made sure to say it a lot more these last three years, and Dorothy would never skip a beat.”

Merv Held Her Close As Dorothy Took Her Last Breath

And when Dorothy took her last breath, Merv held her close, showing the kind of love that mirrors God’s own: faithful, enduring, and unshakable. Because real love doesn’t just survive storms–it shines through them. It’s the kind of love that whispers to the soul: “You are cherished, always.” Even from this side of heaven to the next. Memories may fade, but love remains eternal. I have no doubt that when Merv meets Dorothy on heaven’s ground one day, he will say, “A bushel and a peck, a hug around the neck.”

1 Corinthians 13:7: "Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance."
