New Jersey High School Basketball Star Keeps Playing through Cancer Diagnosis

"The one thing that means the world to him is playing basketball,” Jackson’s mother, Lynsey Jackson, said. “Cancer took a lot from him, but it's not going to take this."

He Suddenly Lost 18 Pounds and His Family Got Worried

With every step, dribble, and shot, he showed us all the power of relentless hope, which doesn’t give up even when the odds are stacked high. And sometimes that’s what faith looks like–getting up again and again no matter how heavy the fight. When Johnny, a junior in high school, suddenly lost 18 pounds, his family knew something was wrong. What followed was a series of tests, eventually leading to the diagnosis that no one was prepared for: stage 4B Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The battle he would face off the court was daunting, but Johnny couldn’t back down from a challenge. He approached his diagnosis like a game he knew he could win, much like he did when facing opponents on the court. He approached Goliath just like David approached him, and he stared down at his competition with faith. "I'm a competitor ... so I kind of just faced it like a game, and I was kind of up for the challenge from day one. I knew I was going to take it down," he said.

Even as he began the exhausting cycle of chemotherapy in the summer of 2024, Johnny refused to let cancer steal his passion for the game. Despite undergoing ten brutally intense treatments, he still laced up his sneakers for his team’s opening game. "I just went out there and did it," Johnny said. His body was weak from the chemotherapy, pain surging through his nerves, but his heart remained steadfast.

Johnny Was Playing through His Cancer Diagnosis

"This chemotherapy, it's really vicious. I have nerve pain all over my body right now. It's just so brutal, it'll knock me out for a few days." He recalled. But Johnny’s resolve was greater than the pain. There have been ups and downs, and Johnny has faced many struggles along the way. But the courage to beat it has kept him going with hope, keeping him on the courts of life and basketball.

As Johnny marked his twelfth and final chemotherapy treatment on January 13, 2025, there was a moment of quiet triumph in his heart. For now, he is resting from his fight with cancer and will find out in February if he is cancer-free, but the strength he has shown in the face of adversity has already won the most important game of all: the fight for his life. This kid is more than a basketball player; he is a reminder to us all that courage, strength, and faith have the power to defy the odds.

Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
