Above Rubies

Today’s Truth

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10, NIV).

Friend to Friend

Have your heard the story about the man that was helping one of his cows give birth?

When he noticed his four-year-old son standing wide-eyed at the fence, soaking in the whole event the man thought, "Great... how am I going to explain all this to the mind of a four- year-old? I guess I'll just let him ask, and then I'll answer."

After everything was over, the man walked back to the barn with his son to clean up. After a long suspense, the man's curiosity overcame him. "Well son, do you have any questions?" he asked.

"Just one," said the young son, still deep in thought. "How fast was that calf going when it hit that cow?"

Sometimes life can seem as confusing to us as the birth of that calf was to the four-year old in that joke. Every day you and I face decisions. Our responses to those decisions greatly influence all aspects of who we are. We need wisdom from God for daily living. The Bible says that, “if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him (James 1:5).

Proverbs 3:13-20 talks extensively about the benefits of wisdom:

“Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.”

As you just read, when we find wisdom, great blessings come to us. We gain priceless understanding from God, long life, riches, honor, pleasant ways, and peace. Wow! That is a ton of blessings wrapped in a single package called wisdom! Wisdom comes from God, and is available to each of us for the asking. And though it is of great value, it is free.

Why not, pause in prayer right now. Grab your portion of wisdom. He promises that if you ask, it will be given to you.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, Thank you for the promise that if I ask for wisdom you will give it to me. You are such a generous God. With each passing day, I realize how much I need Your wisdom. Please give me wisdom so I can be equipped to honor you with my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

  • How would you rate yourself on wisdom if you had to pick a number between one and ten?
  • What number do you think your spouse, best friend, or employer would give you?
  • Have you asked God to pour out His wisdom on your heart lately? Add this to prayer journal this month.

More from the Girlfriends

The longer I live, the more I realize that wisdom is a wonderful thing! One thing wisdom has taught me, is to take time out each day to worship. In this New Year, challenge yourself to intentionally worship. Blessings will surely follow.
