What Has God Deposited into Your Account?

Today’s Truth

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3, NIV).

Friend to Friend

Unless you are a baseball fan, married to one, or mom to one, you probably haven’t heard of Matthew Joseph White. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1998, by the Boston Red Sox in 2002, and the Colorado Rockies in 2003. But it is not his baseball career that captured my attention.

In 2003, Matt had an aunt who needed to go into a nursing home. She didn’t have the needed funds to make the move, but she did have a piece of land in his home state of Massachusetts. So Matt agreed to pay her $50,000 for the 45 acres of mountain real estate, which gave her enough to enter the nursing home and get the care she needed.

Matt’s original intent was to build a home on the property, but he found it too hard. When he called a surveyor out to inspect the land, he discovered a treasure lying beneath the rocky soil. The land was solid Goshen stone, a type of valuable mica. Approximately 24 million tons of mica schist rock, worth about $100 per ton, had been resting on the mountain for thousands of years. The estimated worth of Matt’s land? Two-and-a-half billion dollars, minus extraction costs.

When my husband read me Matt’s story in a sports magazine, my mind immediately went to the fact that most of us are sitting on a mountain of treasure and don’t even know it. Goshen stone may be valuable, and I am tickled pink that Matt made the discovery. But you and I are sitting on a mountain worth even more. Jesus is the Rock, and God has already paid the excavation costs. The title deed has your name on it, and you simply have to accept and access the glorious treasure.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). At first glance, you might wonder if this blessing is something that we have to look forward to in the future when we get to heaven. The answer is found in the verb tense of “blessed.” It is past tense - it has already happened. God has already blessed you – right here, right now.

God made the deposit into your account before the creation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), fashioned the key in the shape of a cross, and gave you access to it the moment you believed. Far too many of us leave the blessings sitting in the safety deposit box gathering dust, rather than enjoying the abundant life Jesus came to give.

Here’s the truth of the matter: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3). Everything? Everything. God has given you everything you need to live the victorious, abundant, fulfilling, vibrant, godly life in Christ.

Again, notice the verb tense of “given.” It is past tense. God has blessed you; His divine power has given you. This is not a promise for something that is going to happen in the future. This is a promise of what has already been done for you in the past. But it is up to you to march over to the safety deposit box, insert the key, and begin enjoying the blessings.

God didn’t save you and then put you on the front lines and say,”Now do the best you can.” He has given you everything you need to live the life He has called you to live. He has given you the power of the Holy Spirit, the mind of Christ, riches of heaven, a bountiful inheritance, and a new identity… just to name a few.

God doesn’t give us everything we want. Our Father does not want spoiled children. But He does give us everything we need to live the victorious and abundant life.

Let’s Pray

Lord, thank You that Your divine power has given me everything I need for life and godliness through my knowledge of Him who called me by His own glory and goodness. Open my eyes to see the promises and my heart to receive them.

In Jesus’s Name,

Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Here is a list of just a few of the promises that God has deposited into your account. I encourage you to take some time today and ponder each one. If you don’t have time to do them all, consider looking up one each day this week and thanking God for His provision.

More from the Girlfriends

One of the most important lessons I ever learned was about my position in Christ, my personage in Christ (who I am), and my possessions in Christ. The truth of who I am as a child of God gave me the courage to overcome feelings of inferiority, insecurity, and inadequacy. If you would like to learn how to walk in the confidence of your new identity in Christ, and begin seeing yourself as God sees you, my book, Becoming Spiritually Beautiful: Seeing Yourself as God Sees You will help you get there.
