Your Smile Costs Nothing But Gives Much

This devotional was written by Jim Burns

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love. —1 John 4:7-8

One of the greatest ways to love someone is to give them your smile. I have long forgotten where I found this profound thought, but I share it with you and challenge you to share your smile with someone else today.

A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

GOING DEEPER:

1. God gave you your smile so you could give it away. Sometimes God uses a simple smile to change the life of someone who needs it. Sometimes the first step of sharing your faith is your smile. Who needs your smile today?

2. A smile is an outward sign of an inward affection or love. Where does 1 John 4:7,8 say our inward love comes from?
