Hands-on Faith for Families
Week of January 20, 2014
Theme: Poor in Spirit
Rich Beyond Your Wealth
Play: Describe what your day would be like as a famous person, such as a movie star, athlete or political figure. Let each child take a turn and talk about how money, fame and power might change how she lived.
Talk: We sometimes think that blessed people are those with a lot of material possessions. In 1 Timothy 6:17, the wealthy are told not to put their faith in what they own, but in God, who gives us what we need. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus went as far as saying that people who are "poor in spirit" are blessed. So regardless of their circumstances — money, fame or power — if they treat others better than themselves and live in humility before God, they are considered wealthy or blessed in the kingdom of heaven. How might a humble attitude make you a blessed person?
Pray: Ask God for humility and the ability to know how great He is.
