Handling God’s Word
As Christians we often feel wise and secure because we are familiar with God’s word. We acquire a sense of empowerment and feel justified in our actions because we have confidently applied this verse or that to the decisions we have made. However, God warns us that we must use the utmost care in how we handle the Scriptures. We cannot selectively quote one text and ignore another. We must always consider the context and the original intent of every verse we consult. We must not allow preachers, counselors and Bible study leaders to sanction our behavior with carelessly handled texts. God poignantly asks, “How can you say ‘We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord,’ when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?” (Jer.8:8) So it should be your ever-present concern to “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2Tim.2:15).

MAY OFFER
Jesus commanded us to “love the Lord your God with all your … mind”(Luke 10:27). It is hard to ponder God as transcendently glorious, perfectly holy, absolute in power, and impeccably wise without our attitudes and actions being shaped by those truths. When we worship God, we dare not simply mouth the words of our worship songs and hymns; our minds must be focused and engaged so that our lives will follow. As we meditate on the glorious truth of who God is, may our lives be continually transformed by the renewal of our mind.
When you give to Focal Point this month we would like to show our appreciation by sending you a copy of a brand new CD from the worship band at Compass Bible Church. The CD includes four original songs designed to engage both our hearts and minds in worship to our exalted God. The CD is titled Coronation. We’re also including a Bible study booklet on the Psalms, covering the basics everyone should know in order to fully unlock, appreciate and learn from these heart-filled cries.
Request the Coronation CD and the Psalms booklet with your donation this month.
