In Proportion to Your Faith
If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:8
A very cool thing has been happening to me lately. I have realized that the more faith I have, the more that I believe that I can accomplish, and the more that I believe I can accomplish, the more I actually do accomplish! I sound like Dr. Seuss, but do you hear what I’m saying? You see, the power lies in the fact that I know the truth: it’s not “me” who is accomplishing these things; it’s God through me! All of this has to do with the proportion of my faith. It goes back to that verse about “faith without words is dead” (James 2:26).
It’s pretty simple. Let’s say, for example, you are going on a job interview. It would make sense that you are qualified for this job. You believe you can get the job, so you show up for the interview. Now, the people who did not believe they would get the job did not go to the interview. But those who believed that they could get the job showed up. In the end, one of the believers gets the job! I’m not a rocket scientist here, but it makes sense that someone who showed up for the interview got the job, and the people who did not show up did not get the job.
The same is true with faith. If we believe God is able, it helps us feel capable enough to show up. We don’t show up based on our own strength and talent; rather, we show up knowing God has equipped us and God will work through us! This type of thinking creates warriors who are limitless, who are able to accomplish great things, and who receive victory – despite the circumstances, the intensity of the battle, and the logic of this world.
The reason I referenced the above scripture in Romans is that I love how it refers to “the proportion to his faith.” You see, we either show up or don’t show up based on how much faith we have. Athletes don’t wake up on the day of the Olympics and say, “I think I’ll show up and compete for the gold today.” No, they woke up years ago, consistently got up early, trained hard, sacrificed, lost more than they won until they started winning more than they lost, and eventually – say after 3, 5, or 10 years, they woke up on the day of the Olympics and showed up because they were actually one of the chosen athletes on an Olympic team! They believed years earlier that they could be an Olympic athlete one day. Then they put in the time day after day after year after year. As they did, their muscle and skill built, until they were strong enough and skilled enough to compete in the Olympics. The same is true of our faith, it gradually increases over time. Day after day, when we wake and choose faith, our faith grows. Year after year, as we consistently choose faith, our faith grows. Our faith grows spiritual muscles which creates physical results. Our faith is made manifest (tangible results) through consistent prayer, meditation on the Word, taking action, and seeing the results!
I can honestly say that the proportion of my faith is much larger now than it was 10 years ago. I hope that you are excited with the news that whatever level of faith you have now – you can have more! Your faith can become limitless! All you have to do is commit yourself to waking each day and walking in the faith that you have now, fully expecting the faith you have now to pale in comparison to the proportion of faith you will have next week, next month, next year, and the next decade! Isn’t that exciting?!
Wake up and walk into all that God has for you today, realizing that He’ll walk you right into all He has for you tomorrow, next week, next month, and the next decade! God is a God of limitless possibilities and He wants you to walk into all that He has for you. And He will do it “in proportion of your faith.” He loves to hear how His children believe Him! Praise Him, and tell Him how much you believe in His ability to give you the desires of your heart. Oh, and buckle up – it’s going to be an AMAZING ride!
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
