“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because it is true.” - John 13:13
I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple,” said Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1).
Adonai speaks of master-ownership. “You call me Adonai and so I am,” said Jesus Christ to his disciples. God revealed his ownership of us through Israel and expects our obedience and respect.
There are good masters and bad masters. God is a good master—one who makes sure his servants are properly cared for and reimbursed for their services. Paul delighted to call himself a slave and to serve the Lord Christ, never doubting that God was his master, and marveling at the rewards of his servitude.
Do you ever worry that Christianity will reduce you to servitude? I have news for you—it will! But it will turn out to be glad and willing service—a voluntary offering. You will soon count it a privileged calling.
Our master is master of the universe, of the people in it, and of their destiny. He is master of our earthly masters. He is master of our situations, master of our trials and our joys. He is the master master!
I hear people talking about making Jesus Christ Lord or master of their lives. They cannot do that. They cannot make him what he is already. He is Adonai, and you and I had better get around to acknowledging him as such.
