Probability Path
Win or Not.
My son, Jacob, is experiencing his last day of 6th grade today. I told him that we would use my Starbucks gift card that a fellow-Warrior Mom recently gave me, and we would go celebrate when he gets off the bus. I also told him that we would play the board game that he made for a final school math project. He titled it, “Probability Path: Win it or Not.” It’s a very colorful, cute, Candy Land looking path on poster board. He built in a colored box, with a gold prong thing in the center that holds a paperclip (the spinner). He used the game pieces from the Cranium board game; they are red, yellow, blue and green little funny looking guys. Just last night, I looked more carefully at his game. He gave certain squares either a positive or negative twist. Let me type them for you:
1. You fell, move back 3 spaces
2. You found a flying car, take this shortcut
3. You took the wrong path, follow this arrow
4. Swamp! You miss a turn
5. A yellow square reads, “You fell into the swamp” and it has an arrow that makes you go to the green “Swamp Miss a turn” square.
6. You found gold, take shortcut
7. You were flung by a giant sling-shot, move ahead 2 spaces
8. Start over (strategically placed 2 spaces before the finish line)
9. Quick Sand, Miss a turn (strategically placed 1 space before the finish line).
I told Jacob that the game reminds me of life. He looked at me and said, “How so?” I said, “Well, isn’t it just like life that you are going along fine and boom, you fall into a swamp! He said, “Like when I twisted my ankle right before the soccer tournament and couldn’t play?” I said, “Yep.” I continued, “And when you think about walking by faith, there are times when life is so hard that we fall, and feel as if we fall backwards 3 steps or take a wrong path. Other times we may feel so faith-filled that we get flung to new levels and we soar.” When I noticed that the 2 squares right before the finish line were negative and potentially defeating, I said, “And mainly, Jacob, when you walk by faith, the enemy really tries to get you to quit right before you are about to reach the finish line. Something happens where you have to start all over, or you get stuck in the quick-sand of circumstances when you are seemingly inches from the prize!” “Wow, Mom. That’s true. It really is,” Jacob said.
The difference, however, between Jacob’s Probability Path Game: Win it or Not and a life lived by faith is that when we walk by faith, we are sure to win every time because the outcome is not based on mere probability; it is dependent and guaranteed, based upon the Power of Christ!
He who is coming will come and will not delay, but my righteous one will live by faith and if they shrink back he will not be well pleased with him. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved!.
