What Would Daddy Do? - One Year Devotions for Women

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. - Psalm 143:10

So often we face difficult choices. We cannot learn God’s will for us unless the Holy Spirit helps us. As members of God’s family, we have the Holy Spirit. The psalmist prayed, “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing” (Psalm 143:10). “Teach me” and “your gracious Spirit” go together. God’s gracious Spirit teaches us, guides us, and gives us the wisdom we need.

A father died and left his wife in charge of the family business. There were many huge decisions to make. The wife had never been involved in the day-to-day running of things and so was overwhelmed with the choices set before her. “I’m trying to think of what Daddy would do,” she would say. Her daughter, who had run the business alongside her father and knew his mind-set, used this knowledge to advise her mother. “This is what Daddy would do,” she would say confidently. What the daughter did for the mother is what the Spirit of God does for us!

Who knows the mind of God better than the Spirit? The Bible says that God’s Spirit “searches out everything and shows us even God’s deep secrets” (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Spirit will advise us what is God’s mind on the matter. Then we will know which way to go, which choice to make, which path to take. And God promises to lead us forward on “firm footing.”
