The limitless resource of God’s goodwill
May 6
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. - Romans 12:10
For many years, Eunice Pike worked among the Mazatec people in southwestern Mexico. During her time there, she discovered some interesting things about these wonderful people. For example, the people seldom wish someone else well. Not only that, the Christians among them are especially hesitant to share the gospel.
Eunice studied this phenomenon and came to the conclusion that it stems from the concept of “limited good.” Essentially, the Mazatecs believe there’s only so much good to go around. Therefore, to wish someone well would drain them of happiness and give it to another. And to share God’s grace would remove grace from them and transfer it to someone else.
For the Mazatecs, goodwill is a precious commodity that’s meant to be hoarded. But according to the Bible, goodwill is a limitless resource that comes from God and is meant to be shared with others liberally.
Make it your goal to outdo one another in showing honor. Be a force for encouragement in others’ lives. Speak kindness instead of harsh and bitter words. Share the message of Christ with others. Spread the limitless resource of God’s goodwill to everyone around you!
