Today's Special is: Servants in Marriage
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Dawn Mast
Main Ingredient:
Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Greet also the church that meets at their house.
Romans 16:3-5a NIV
Entree:
It's easy to identify with the way my kids were when they were toddlers. I sometimes get into this "I can do it myself" attitude and if someone tries to help me I get really snippy. Then, if no one helps me I get very grumpy.
Maybe like a toddler I need a nap.
And a snack.
This attitude can be really detrimental in a marriage. It's important to have separate interests and hobbies, but as husband and wife we truly do need to rely on each other. There is a sweet tenderness when we read about Priscilla and Aquila.
First of all, they were tentmakers.
Together.
She was his companion and obviously he wanted her there. In every mention of Aquila in the Bible, her name, Priscilla, comes right after. Sometimes before (Romans 16:3-4). They are always mentioned together.
I'm encouraged by this model of support and teamwork. My husband and I don't even pitch tents, let alone make them like Aquila and Priscilla. But their example of persistence and collaboration helps to strengthen me on days when I feel I need some extra motivation to stay in the game.
Being a servant of God is sometimes not easy. However, being a servant with someone you love is a tender, growing time if you are willing to work together.
Take Out:
Ask the Lord to show you how to be a servant to your husband. Remember to thank Him for His faithfulness when He reveals His plan to you and when you see that your husband feels loved because you have reached out to him in service.
Dessert:
Thank You Lord, in the name of Jesus, that You have shown us true servants in Your Word. Please Lord, give me a servant's heart so that I may reach out to others in a non-complaining way and love them with the love of Christ. Thank You Jesus that You are faithful to answer us and to help us grow in knowledge and faithfulness to You. Amen.
