John 13:5 NIV

Entrée

I have always been busy – feeling guilty if I wasn’t.  My mother was the same and instilled it in me.  Her mother was the same…

Then came a whisper: ‘rest’… You mean, like do nothing?

We’re lied to by the world and told that even in your ‘free’ time you should be doing something – a craft, a hobby, a video game, something.  I think it is the great deception from the great deceiver.  If he can just keep our minds preoccupied with stuff, then there will be no way we will hear the still small voice.

Used to be people sat on the front porch in the evenings, rocking or swinging.  Used to be Sunday afternoons were truly a time of rest, napping or reading the Word.

Now with most households needing two incomes, with children involved in more and more ‘extra’ activities, with image being the driving force, rest is a forgotten word.  Yet at a time when the most unrest and biggest sacrifice of all time was about to happen, Jesus had his disciples rest while He tenderly washed their feet.  Now Peter was a little more uptight than the rest (kind of like me) and questioned the Lord about this….

“Lord are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”  “No,” said Peter, “You shall never wash my feet.”  Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”  “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

John 13:6-9 NIV

I love Peter, if it meant being with the Lord he would settle down long enough for a whole bath.

How about us?  Can we settle down and rest now and then, put our feet up, soak up the Light… Whisper our heart thoughts, lay back our head and listen, feel the cleansing of His gentle touch?

Take Out:

Together let’s ask the Lord ‘Is there something I should eliminate?’  ‘Is there something more important than constant activity?’  Let’s purpose to find five minutes to put our feet up and hush so we can hear…

Dessert:

Oh, Father, we have bought into the lie and we have taught it to our children as well.  Help us to pull back from what the world says is productive and seek You.  Help us shift our priorities from thingsto the Light of the world.  Give us rest for our weary souls Father, calm our racing hearts, and speak to our spirit through the One that’s already in our hearts.  In Jesus’ Gentle Name, Amen.
