Today’s Special is: Don’t Miss the Opportunity To Be a Great Mentor!
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Tiffany Wilson
Main Ingredient:
…Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
1 Samuel 3:9 NIV
Entrée:
Regardless of how you spin it, mentoring is a responsibility. It requires you be a trusted ear and a wise guide to the mentee. It also demands your time, which seems to be at a short supply nowadays!
Don’t fret!! Despite the time commitment and the responsibilities, there’s something so incredibly fulfilling about mentoring that makes it compelling to give what you have to give.
In 1 Samuel 3, I love how Eli teaches us how to mentor. He was calm, clear and concise with Samuel and because Eli had “experience” with God and a keen “discerning” spirit, he was confidently able to point Samuel in the right direction. He told Samuel,
Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ So Samuel went…
Eli’s ability to guide Samuel helped Samuel connect with God on a deeper level and on that very day he received the call on his life.
Are you being tugged to be a mentor? For some reason, are you shying away from the responsibility? Do you feel like you’re not qualified?
Well don’t forget God qualifies, calls and connects! Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering mentoring:
· It’s not for a lifetime, but it can last a lifetime!
How many of you remember your favorite teacher in grade school? Well, he or she was a mentor to you and although it clearly didn’t last a lifetime, you still can recollect and give thanks for having met him or her. So, don’t be defeated before you begin, you will mentor for a season, not a lifetime.
· It’s a win-win, not a one-way!
A great mentoring experience will bless the mentor and mentee. There’s something about committed mentoring. It ricochets from the teacher to those being taught back to the teacher. No one-way blessings here.
· It’s in you and it’s needed!
There’s something about you. Your education, your smile, your patience, your precision and your passion are exactly what’s needed to reach that mentee. So, don’t discredit yourself. You’re needed.
If you know someone that wants you to be their mentor, pray about it, it could be God’s way of preparing you for more.
Did this post speak to you? Please share how mentoring is calling or challenging you, we’d love to hear about it.
Take Out:
On a basic level, we are all called or will be called to mentor someone, so if you shy away from offering your gifts or wisdom to others, seek God to get at the root of your apprehension because I know there’s something about you that’s needed.
Dessert:
Lord, I thank You for pulling me out from a hidden place, so that I can share my gifts and talents with Your people. Lord, give me the strength to see me the way You see me and then, like Samuel, help me to GO do exactly what You’ve asked me to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
