Oh Lord, It is Hard To Be Humble

Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5 NIV
Recently my 14 year old daughter began a homeschool co-op. Every Wednesday we get a much needed break from each other when I drop her off at school and I go to work at my new office (my new office has a Starbucks, a cafe and looks a lot like Target). It’s perfect.
The first day at my new office I was downright giddy with anticipation. Oh, the words I would write. The work I would complete. But then one of my children began texting me. I had his college homework assignment. It was on my computer.
My son had waited till the last possible evening to do an assignment and was slightly panicked when he woke up to find I had taken my computer and his assignment to work with me.
So the first two hours of my blissful day of writing turned into crisis management via text and email from 60 miles away. I was furious. So furious I couldn’t write. So irritated I could feel the blood pooling in my face. So I did what any woman in my situation would do. I took a walk about the office for a little retail therapy.
But then I got this text,
Yes ma’am. I am aware that I procrastinate. I have done it since 7th grade and it’s a habit I am trying to break. I completely forgot that Grace had school today that is why I used your computer. I apologize for the unneeded stress… I love you.
And just like that my anger was gone. Completely. Instead, I felt compassion and maybe even a wee bit of sympathy for my son, who may get the whole procrastination thing honestly.
Isn’t it amazing what a little humility will do?
When someone is angry with you, do your best to show humility.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 NIV
LORD God Almighty, thank You for always being slow to anger and humble in heart. Teach us to love one another as You have loved us. Soften our hearts that we may not be harsh toward others. Empower us to live to serve one another and not think more highly of ourselves than we ought. May we be the first to apologize. Bless us LORD and make us peacemakers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
