Are We Turning the World Upside Down?
“But the Jews which believed not…set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them [Paul and Silas] out to the people. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, “These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also.” - Acts 17:5-6
Ours is the greatest mission on earth: the salvation of lost souls. Our message is the greatest message: the glorious Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Master is the greatest Master, Jesus Himself. The church not interested in evangelism is not worthy of the ground it occupies. We must evangelize or we will fossilize. Our mandate is to preach the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ to every creature.
What was the early church like? “And in those days…the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.” Acts 6:1, 7
We do so little with so much. They did so much with so little. The early church didn’t have Christian colleges, seminaries, radio and television stations, or printing presses. They had no finances, no prestige. They went out to tell the message of a Galilean peasant, a carpenter’s son, who was crucified. They went out against the imperial might of Rome, the intellectual sophistry of Greece, the stiff-necked resistance of the Jewish religion, and it was said of them, “These people turned the world upside down.
Do you have a sincere concern for souls? The apostle Paul did. Examine your heart. If I were to ask, “How many of you have a concern for souls?” almost every one of you would answer, “I do.” But you would feel a twinge of conscience because your conscience couldn’t bear you witness?
