We Call Out to Dry Bones, “Come Alive!”

“Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breathto enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”” Ezekiel 37: 4-6 ESV
I’ve been getting into Lauren Daigle lately. Her latest album, How Can It Be has become a real pool of anthems for me to draw from during an especially thirsty season.
One of her tracks, “Come Alive (Dry Bones),” has a chorus that declares, “We call out to dry bones, ‘come alive, come alive!’” which I’ve been singing loudly into the mirror as I put on my makeup each morning. It makes me chuckle to think about it. It really is a fitting anthem for a middle-aged woman who just woke up!
There’s a beautiful truth nearly hidden in that chorus and in the scripture it comes from. It’s us—you and me— and the role the Lord allows us to play.
Make no mistake: it’s God alone who miraculously causes those dry bones to come together, and later, His breath to inhabit them and bring them to life.
But if that weren’t miraculous enough, He invites us to be the ones to call it forth!
The Father has always been about relationship and he’s always offering us a partnership in His divine work. It brings Him pleasure and glory and honor when we step out in faith and speak life in His name.
Proverbs 18:21 says that “death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Think about what He’s asking Ezekiel to do in this passage—to speak life into what is not only dead, but dried up and all but forgotten. He’s inviting him to raise up an army! He’s inviting him to resurrect his own nation!
My precious sister, our Father has just such an invitation for you.
There is power in your tongue to speak life. Resurrection power is housed right inside you, ready to be released at your word.
Ask the Lord to bring to mind what needs new life breathed into it right now. Then prophesy to those dry bones. Prophesy to the breath, in Jesus’ name: “Come alive!”
Oh Father, We forget what power You’ve placed within us, and even more, we forget that You’ve equipped us to use it for Your glory! Help us today--right here, right now--to stir up the dry bones within us, to call ourselves to come alive, so that we may be able and ready to speak forth life and resurrection in Your name. Thank You for trusting us and inviting us into this incredible work. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
