Life's Uninvited Guests – Beloved Women – April 1, 2019

READ

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ESV

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT

In his book, A Grief Observed, C.S. Lewis journals through his tangled emotions and spiritual doubts after his wife of four years died of cancer. Like Lewis, we know that we’ll inevitably encounter the realities of suffering, sickness, and separation. However, when they finally arrive at our doorstep, we’re never quite prepared for their visit.

In 2 Corinthians 4:16, Paul reminds the persecuted Corinthian church that we can endure life’s momentary afflictions because “though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” (ESV) The reality of pain and loss in this life points us to the power of Christ and the hope of eternity in God’s healing presence.

Unfortunately, bolting the doors and pretending we’re not home won’t make tragedy and pain go away. They, like joy, are apart of the human experience. These uninvited guests force us to anchor our hope, not in our circumstances, but in our good and faithful God.

PRAY

God, we thank You that even in the midst of pain and doubts, we can take comfort knowing that our afflictions are momentary and light in view of Your power and presence. That doesn’t always make them feel less painful, but we find the grace to endure life’s trials when we anticipate your coming glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

REFLECT

How have your own pains pointed you to the hope we have in Christ?
