The Most Exciting Treasure Hunt of All
By Kristen Terrette

“… in whom are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3

My friends and I had a secret club called the Earth Savers when we were young. We had a hidden meeting place in the woods behind my house that new members—lucky neighborhood kids or our siblings—could find only if they followed the directions and clues correctly. We’d lead them across the big fallen tree over our rushing creek, then have them zigzag around the moss-lined earth to another part of the stream where a mini-pond formed. We always found frogs and tadpoles there, and I’m sure there were snakes too, though I’m glad those treasures never made an appearance.

My favorite part of our club was guiding someone to a special location, tucked away from the world.

Just like my “Earth Saver” friends followed step-by-step clues to the treasured meeting place, some people in first century Palestine, believed in Gnosticism, which they thought would provide knowledge to unlock life’s clues and lead them to a higher understanding and eventually earn them entrance into heaven.

Paul, the author of today’s verse, ferociously spoke against this philosophy because, thanks to Jesus, as Christ-followers we have direct access to all wisdom and knowledge through Him. We don’t have to unlock clues or follow a map, hoping one day we might be smart enough to obtain a ticket to heaven.

Nope. We’ve got Jesus. He is the way.

Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, the hunt for His hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge can begin--but not in order to get into heaven, because we’ve already been granted that. Instead, because as we search in Him for wisdom and knowledge, He’ll open our eyes to things we’ve never noticed before.

Search for the hidden treasures found in Him through Scripture and prayer. He’ll make it the most exciting treasure hunt of all.
