A Prayer to Pray before You Go to Work

Heather Barr

This world is truly our mission field, and that field includes our workplace. What a tremendous opportunity we have to be the light of Christ as we go into the workplace each day. What an incredible opportunity to show His love to a hurting and broken world.

Here is a prayer to prepare you as you go to work:

Pray for a Heart Prepared for the Day

Father, thank You for creating this brand-new day I get to live. How wonderful to know that You have every step ready and prepared for me to step into. You have all kinds of wonderful things in store for me today, as You lead the way!

“The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 ESV)

I praise You and honor You this morning, God. I declare my trust in You! Search me and know my heart, renew my spirit. Thank you, Lord, for Your faithfulness each morning.

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24 KJV)

As I prepare for this day, as I prepare to go into work, I ask that You prepare me. Lord, will you prepare my heart, and will You guard my heart? Will You help me to love fearlessly today?

Pray for Protection Along the Way

Lord, I ask for Your protection as I go, that You will be my front and rear guard, sealing and protecting my mind, body, and spirit.

“You will not leave in a hurry, running for your lives. For the LORD will go ahead of you; yes, the God of Israel will protect you from behind.” (Isaiah 52:12 NLT)

Thank You for Your protection, God. You are so faithful.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.

"Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.” (Psalm 91:1-6 NKJV)

Send forth Your angels to go with me today, Lord.

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11 NKJV)

Pray for Opportunities to Shine the Light of Christ

Lord, thank You for the opportunities You give me. Thank you that I am able to work today. It amazes me that You enable me to carry Your light and Your love into this dark world. Help me to always remember that You live within me, and that You work through me in all that I do and in all that I say. Thank You for this incredible opportunity to shine with Your light, Jesus!

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 KJV)

“For that is what the Lord ordered us to do: ‘I have made you a light to the gentiles to be the means of salvation to the very ends of the earth.’” (Acts 13:47 ISV)

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” (John 8:12 NASB)

Pray for the Wisdom in Your Actions and Words

Father, will You give me wisdom today? Will You guide me through any obstacles of life that may come my way today?

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5 NIV)

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV)

Holy Spirit, will You help me to say the things You would have me to say? Give me grace, patience, and a loving heart toward those I come in contact with today.

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:6 ESV)

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17 NIV)

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (Proverbs 16:24 ESV)

Pray for Blessing over Your Workplace

I pray blessing over my workplace, my boss, my clients, my co-workers, and all who enter into our place of work. Will You encourage them today, Father? Show me how I can be a blessing to those I come into contact with.

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.
The people curse him who holds back grain,
but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.”
(Proverbs 11:25-26 ESV)

Lord, You say in Your Word that as Your child, I am empowered to shift the atmosphere around me by walking in love. Lord, will You give me wisdom today on how I can do that? Show me when to encourage, when to bounce back any negative word or attitude in a loving way – help me to bless and not curse with my actions and words. Help me to keep a right attitude that reflects You, Lord Jesus.

“Live lovingly, just as the Messiah also loved us and gave himself for us as an offering and sacrifice, a fragrant aroma to God.” (Ephesians 5:2 ISV)

Pray for Peace and Strength in All Your Tasks

Lord Jesus, if I should become overwhelmed today with all of my tasks, help me to remember to keep my eyes on You. I declare my trust in You!

“Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed – that exhilarating finish in and with God – he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God.” (Hebrews 12:2 The Message)

Will You give me a heavenly creativity today? Help me to see things as You see them, Father.

If I should tire or grow weary, help me to remember that it is You who sustains me!

“It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect.” (Psalm 18:32 NKJV)

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 KJV)

Finally: Pray for Joy in Your Salvation

Lord, with every step that I take today, help me to be reminded of You, help me to remember that You are with me. Empower me, Lord! I declare that I am Your child, empowered to be Your “ambassador,” Your light in this world.

“Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20 NKJV)

I trust in Your Word, God. Help me to live it out today!

“Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.” (Psalm 89:15 KJV)

Amen.
