Set Apart – Beloved Women – May 8, 2020

READ: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” (Acts 13:2-3 ESV)

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Sometimes we hear a voice in the far distance and we wonder, who said that? Who is that? It’s so faint we can’t quite make it out. Proximity matters. The closer we are to someone, both in the physical and relationally, the more we know the intonation of their voice. The more we know the things they would say to us because we know their character.

Some Bibles have Jesus’ words in red clearly indicating who is speaking. In the Old Testament, the prophets shared God’s word and God himself spoke to His people. In this verse, God uses the Holy Spirit to call and commission Saul and Barnabas. The Holy Spirit is our helper (John 14:26) and it is quite comforting to know that the triune God speaks to us according to what we need. For the call that was before them, they would surely need the power of the Holy Spirit. They would need confirmation from the other spiritual leaders and prophets, laying of the hands. They’d need the additional prayers of the family of faith. Be encouraged today, when God calls you, He has truly gone before you. He sends the Helper, He sends a community of believers, He doesn’t send you alone. You, too, have been apart for the work of God. If you need to set aside time to fast and pray, do so and watch God move on your behalf.

PRAY: Father, I pray that You would remind me of Your still small voice. That You would quiet all distractions. I ask for Your call and purpose in my life to be made clear. Remove any and all confusion. I pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to speak to me and guide me as I journey on. Remind me Lord, that You have called your church the set apart ones and I am part of that. All for Your glory, Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

REFLECT: How in tune are you with the Holy Spirit? Do you know His voice? Is there something or someone in the way of you hearing Him clearly? He’s still near, did you move? Come to me, He says.
