Time

I wish things were different some days.  Some days I wish I could change things and slow things down.  It all has happened so fast.  My son is growing up and I’m beginning to be able to visualize the day he will be leaving off to college.  I wish I could stop my son from growing and keep him shielded in the protection of our home forever.  I wish.  Not too long ago I was dropping him off at kindergarten then I blinked and he was in middle school.  I blinked again and now he is a freshman.  Some days I want time to speed up and others I want it to slow down.  Isn’t this the way of life?  

When they’re young you can’t wait to stop buying diapers and when they grow you want them to slow down.  One day when my son was about 5 years old we were in the car and I realized this dilemma and had a proposition, “Hey, I’ll take you to Toys R Us if you stop growing,” I jokingly said to my toddler in the backseat.  With his young wisdom he responded, “Mom!  I can’t do that but will you still take me to Toys R Us”? 

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:  a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 

So I am learning the secret to being content in every situation.  I am reminding myself that in whatever situation I am in, it is good.  There is indeed a time for everything.  For now, I will cherish the days of high school.  Walking the hallways with my son as students run past looking for this year’s classrooms.   Shopping for this year’s school supplies of backpack, pencils and pens, notebooks, and the inevitable new pair of shoes.  Going to the barbershop for the fresh new haircut.  Inevitably, I will blink again and this year will be over also and I’m ok with it.  

The Lord will go with him wherever he goes and I trust that I have trained him up accordingly.  

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4: 11-14

My father in Heaven, thank you for trusting me with your child.  Thank you for the days that you have given us together and the times of laughter and sorrow.  Thank you that without all these things I would not understand your love for me.  Look over my son as he goes through his days and watch over his ways.  I trust that you know what’s best for him and that you will not only prosper him but give him hope and a future. In Jesus’ name, amen.
