It’s 5:30 and my husband is nowhere in sight. Instead, my tween and teen are having an all-out brawl in the living room because Elijah “patted” Tori just a smidge too hard on the head. It’s only the 436th time he’s touched her this afternoon and she’s done with practicing the Fruit of The Spirit. As I come into the living room, no one hears a word I say. Instead, a book gets thrown at my head by accident and my son decides it’s the perfect time to display his manly strength and proceeds to carry me around the house like a rag doll. Never mind the fact the place settings for supper are now on the floor and the living room is trashed.
When we dreamed of motherhood, we assumed it would be just like our Barbie Doll House. Ken would be home early, the babies would stay where we put them, all perfectly clean and cute. We also would have a gorgeous, magazine-ready home complete with a chandelier in every room and a tiny waist.
Instead, we’re 20 pounds heavier and no longer sport a size pencil stick pant size. Our kids sass, have emotions, and minds of their own. They also tend to be smelly and fight you every step of the way about bathing. When we said yes to motherhood, we had no idea our kids would paint the dog pink or use blue sparkle toothpaste to paint pretty pictures on the carpet. We had no idea our hearts would literally run outside of our bodies and we wonder why it seems so much easier for other moms.
The truth is this, ‘momming it’ is hard for every mom. It doesn’t come naturally for all of us—and that’s okay. God didn’t make you a mother based on the letters behind your name. He made you a mother because you were created with specific insights, intuition, wit, and character that your children need. No one can mother your children the way you can. And the best part, we have a Bible filled moms—with stories we can relate to! Let’s look at some inspiring Bible verses for moms.
10 Encouraging Bible Verses for Moms
God sees you, he knows your heart, and the awesome but sometimes tough job we have as moms. The beautiful part is this—he doesn’t want perfection, just our best. Here are ten uplifting verses for when you’re having a difficult day.
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
Exodus 14:14: “The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”
Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Matthew 18:20: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Psalm 46:5: “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”
Who Are Examples of Strong Mothers of the Bible?
If you’ve spent your life trying to replicate your Barbie Doll dream years or your adult life trying to live up to the Proverbs 31 woman, chances are you need some fresh encouragement from the Lord. Let’s take a pause and look at some extraordinary mothers in the Bible.
Sarah
Sarah was a mother who waited years before she was given a child of her own. She was 90 when God fulfilled His promise she would be a mother. Being 90, I’m sure she wasn’t ready for the 2 a.m. feedings, or chasing a toddler. Sarah laughed at the idea that God could do what He promised, but thankfully God’s promise did not rely on the level of Sarah’s faith. God fulfilled His promise according to His plan and Sarah responded in Genesis 21:
“'God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’ And she added, ‘Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.’”
Jochebed
She was a mother with a plan. When a new king came to power in Egypt, he was paranoid the Hebrews would outnumber and overtake Egyptians so he not only made them slaves, he also commanded all Hebrew midwives to kill all of their baby boys upon their births. Jochebed was a Levite woman and she gave birth to her son—Moses. She then managed to hide her son for three months. During that time, she came up with a plan to save her son’s life. She put him in a basket and placed her son in it. Then she had her daughter follow alongside the river until the basket entered into the reeds where Pharaoh’s daughter was bathing. Jochebed’s daughter Miriam, then told her she knew just the right wet nurse for the child she found and offered to fetch the wetnurse for her. Pharaoh’s daughter paid Jochebed to nurse and raise the baby until he was old enough to come live at the palace.
Mary
Mary learned to go with the flow. Mary was merely a teenager when the angel of the Lord appeared to inform her she would have a baby. This baby would save the world and was the son of God. He said to her in Luke 1:31:
“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Mary humbled agreed and was honored God had chosen her even though she was still unmarried and a virgin. Imagine the difficulty she faced. She embraced this revelation with faith. When she visited her cousin Elizabeth, Elizabeth proclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” Mary believed God would fulfill His promise.
Later when Jesus was twelve, Mary literally lost her son—she lost the Son of God. Can you imagine how she felt when she found him three whole days later in a different city at a synagogue? These are just a few moms of the Bible, there are other mothers of the Bible who faced difficult days too.
What Does the Bible Say about Mothers - Scripture and Bible Verses for Moms
Now you may not relate to Sarah, Jochebed, or Mary but God knows you inside and out. He knows your heart and He blessed you with kids. God has a lot to say about how children are a blessing from the Lord but that doesn’t mean you won’t have difficult days. God values mothers because we partner with him to raise up the next generation of Kingdom Builders. He knows just how tough motherhood can be and he values our efforts, our tears, and our exhaustion. In an article about motherhood, it says,
“Jesus saw women as having an intrinsic value equal to that of men. He saw them as human beings and not second class citizens, which was how they were treated at that time. He wasn’t concerned about their sex, age, or marital status but was more concerned about their relationship with God. He addressed women in public, regardless of the situation they were in, and spoke to them with thoughtfulness and caring. He didn’t approve of the sins of the women he met; instead, he confronted them, knowing that they had free will to repent and turn back to God. Jesus regarded women with the highest regard, showing them worth and dignity as human beings. He valued their friendship, prayers for him, financial support, and witness. He honored them, taught them, and thoughtfully ministered to them.”
