A Peaceful Prayer for When You're Making Hard Decisions

Jennifer Waddle

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV)

Are you faced with a hard decision today? Something that’s been weighing on your mind and keeping you awake at night? If so, please know you aren’t alone.

Many of us are trying to navigate life and figure out what to do next. Whether it be a major financial decision, a career choice, or a relationship issue, it isn’t always clear what the right answer is.

Fortunately, we have all the guidance we need from the Holy Spirit. Not only does He lead us in the way we should go, He gives us peace for the journey.

In John 14:26, Jesus said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

And in John 16:13, Jesus assured His disciples with these words: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

Making hard decisions isn’t easy, but our Helper, the Holy Spirit, reminds us of everything Jesus taught so that we can make the right decision based on absolute truth.

Please join me today as I offer a peaceful prayer for everyone faced with difficult decisions. My hope is that you’ll be able to surrender everything to God and trust Him to guard, guide, and bless you.

A Prayer for Making Hard Decisions

Let’s pray.

Heavenly Father, God of all comfort and provision, we come to You today in search of peace. As we are faced with hard decisions, Lord, we seek You first, knowing You will put all the pieces into place. We trust You, Father, to lead us in the way we should go. We surrender all worries and anxieties to You, for we know that worry doesn’t solve a thing.

Your Word says in Philippians chapter 4 to not be “anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Your peace is what we seek, Lord. Beyond all understanding, we need Your peace. We come to You today with thanksgiving in our hearts, with gratefulness, and praise. We lay our requests before You and wait for Your perfect peace to wash over us. Thank You, Father.

In the name of Your Son, Jesus, we pray for clarity and certainty. We know that you are not a God of confusion, and that when we feel confused, it’s the enemy’s way of distracting us and misleading us. Please keep the evil one far from us, that we will not be deceived by him. Remove all doubt and fear from the equation so that we will be able to think clearly and follow Your ways.

Your Word says, in James 4:7 that we are to submit ourselves to You and resist the devil so that he will flee. Lord, we resist the enemy right now, in Jesus’ name! We submit fully to Your will. Please have Your way in us. We don’t want to make any decisions that aren’t in perfect alignment with Your purpose. Show us the way in which we should go.

Thank You, Father, for the Bible that holds every answer we’ll ever need. Your inspired Word gives us wisdom and discernment. We desperately need Your wisdom in this situation. And we know that when we ask for wisdom in belief, You will give it.

Holy God, for all the spoken and unspoken requests today, I pray for Your perfect peace to cover them. As we make hard decisions regarding work, family, finances, and relationships, we ask for courage and strength. Let us know when to speak and when to remain silent. Help us discern when to act and when to be still. Show us the clear path and redirect us when we are veering away.

Most of all, Lord, give us the assurance that we are walking in the light of Your love. Help us hold fast to grace and mercy, forgiving others and seeking forgiveness. Let the glory of Your goodness shine through us as a testimony to others. Let them see how You are working in our lives—even in difficult times—so that they will turn to You, the Living God. In the perfect and holy name of Your Son, Jesus, we pray these things. Amen and amen.
