5 Prayers for Those Impacted by Hurricane Ida

Cally Logan

Hurricane Ida has left Louisiana and much of the East Coast in an ongoing state of Emergency with significant damage and devastation. Reports say Ida is second only to Hurricane Katrina in the most intense hurricanes to hit Louisiana since 1856’s Last Island Hurricane. The people of Louisiana and those on the East Coast who are also being affected by this storm need our prayers, support, and kindness during this time.

1. Prayers for Those in the Path of Ida

Father God,

We come together to pray for those who are residing in the path of Hurricane Ida. Lord, we remember the toll Hurricane Katrina had on the great state of Louisiana. We remember the agony so many were left in as their homes were destroyed and as lives were lost; Lord, we pray that with Hurricane Ida, we would not see that same result. We pray Father for those who are in the path of this storm. We pray that the storm would lose its momentum and strength and that it would dissipate rapidly. We pray for those in its path for protection from all harm and for the ability to find somewhere safe to abide. Lord, for those who are anxious or in distress during this storm, we pray John 14:27 for the peace only You can give, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” The threat is there, but peace can be found through You. We pray that this storm would lessen this very day in the Name of Jesus and that those in its path would be safe from harm.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

2. Prayers for the Injured or Killed and Their Families

Father God,

As of September 1st, it has been reported that four people have lost their lives to this storm so far, and for that, we sincerely ache. Father, we pray for their souls, and we pray for those they leave behind. Please comfort the families that have lost their loved ones. Please give them your strength as they are seeking to piece their lives back together after this storm. May the words of Psalm 147:3 be our prayer over them in their grief, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Lord, we pray for those who have been injured as well. We know that so many are in recovery, and Lord, we know that this storm is not over yet. We pray truly that no one would be hurt and no more lives would be lost as this storm continues. You are our Healer, our Comforter, and our Savior, and so we come to You in prayer for healing, protection, and recovery from all this storm has produced.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

3. Prayers for First Responders and Medical Professionals

Father God,

We lift up the first responders and those who are called to action during this time. Our first responders and health care workers have tirelessly worked during the Pandemic, and with natural disasters on top of everything, we know it can be daunting and overwhelming. Lord, please give them supernatural strength, sustenance, and ability through Your Spirit. Help us to support them how we can and to remember to thank them for their service. Please abide within them, giving them the vigor to continue. Please place it upon the hearts of those who are available and able to to travel to these places hit by Ida to assist. Lord, please bless these selfless and compassionate hearts who do so much to care for the people in our communities and our great country. Give them wisdom as they navigate what it looks like to care for and treat their patients, and provide understanding as only You can of how to aid so many people at once. We lift each and every one of them up to You today.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

4. Prayers for Those who have had Property Loss or Damage

Father God,

We pray for those who have had property loss and damage. The home is a haven that should be a safe place, a resting spot, and for so many, we never imagine our homes and property being ravaged by a storm. For those who are experiencing this devastation now, we lift them up in prayer. Please provide the help and support they desperately need from neighbors, friends, and family. Please allow for resources and supplies to be readily and quickly available to them as they begin to rebuild their lives. Give them courage and strength emotionally, physically, and spiritually as they navigate these next days and weeks. May they feel Your Spirit upon them as they enter into this time of rebuilding. We also pray, Lord, that there would be provision for clean drinking water, food, and power to all those who need it. Often after these storms, those necessities in life become scarce, so we pray now for all to have access to what they need to survive.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

5. Prayers for Recovery and Reconstruction

Father God,

We come together to pray for recovery and reconstruction during this time. Whenever there is a natural disaster or tragedy, it can become so easy to feel downcast in spirit, but we know that You are still on the Throne, Lord. We pray for those who have been impacted by this storm that they would find their refuge in You. We pray as they see to reconstruct their lives, homes, and communities that there would be gentle reminders that You see them and that You care. Please provide expedited assistance, help, and resources for them in this time of restoration. Place it upon the hearts of those who can give money, time, building materials, supplies, or a lending hand to come forward. Lord, we recall the early Church in the book of Acts and how they sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day, they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:45-47). Just as the early Church came together to support and serve one another, we pray that those in the Body of Christ, the Church today, would feel called to do the same in Christian fellowship. Lord, we pray for unity and kindness to abide in Your Name through Your Church during this difficult time.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

Hurricane Ida has left Louisiana and parts of the East Coast in deep need of assistance. Together as the Body of Christ, we can come together through prayer, financial support, and lending a hand to help our brothers and sisters in their time of hardship. Let us come humbly before God to ask how we can be the Hands and Feet of Christ during this time.
