Actor Will Smith said he believes faith in God has allowed him to see success in life.
“You can’t get where I get if you don’t love the Lord, you don’t get to sit how I sit, move how I move if you don’t love the Lord. You’d be seeing a whole lot of other repercussions,” Smith said in an online interview with author and preacher DeVon Franklin.
Smith was talking about faith in light of his most recent role as Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, in the movie King Richard.
Williams was known as a man of faith.
Smith said in the interview he saw how faith was so important to the Williams family.
“You have to have faith. That’s what Mrs. Oracene [had],” he said, referring to the matriarch of the Williams family. “She’s so solid that she is completely, thoroughly and totally certain. She doesn’t walk in doubt," he added.
“It was this family around this belief, and they trusted God. And they believed that their devotion would be rewarded, and they never wavered.”
Smith said he connected with the role because his grandmother helped him in his own walk of faith.
“My grandmother was really my connection to God,” Smith told The Chrisitan Post.
“She was my spiritual teacher; she was that grandmother at the church, the one having the kids doing the Easter presentations and putting on the Christmas plays, and her kids and grandkids had to be first. She was the most spiritually certain person that I had ever met in my entire life. Even to the point that when she was dying, she was happy, like she was really excited about going to heaven,” Smith added.
In past Instagram posts, Smith has also referred to God. In one in 2018, he wrote about skydiving, saying, “God placed the best things in life on the other side of fear!”
