Time with God - January 8

Psalm 119:145-152

“My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.” (v. 148)

We are usually too busy for meditation, too busy to sit and soak in a passage of Scripture and let its truth gradually unfold in our minds. But often the most beautiful jewels are buried the deepest and will never be seen by the casual reader or the academic studier, but only by the one who takes time to meditate.

If we are not too busy, then we are usually too distracted for meditation. As broadcasters get better and better at what they do, there is almost always something interesting on TV. And the magazines are constantly enticing us with the latest news about celebrities. And there are so many great books to read. And there are people we want to hang out with. And there are the ministry commitments we have to get done.

But remember what Jesus said to Martha (Luke 10:41-42), who was so distracted by her to-do list and resentful that Mary was sitting, captivated by Jesus? Jesus said to Martha, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Is God inviting you tonight, instead of watching TV, to take some time, like the psalmist, and use the “watches of the night” to meditate on his word?
