No day on this earth is guaranteed. Not for those who are old, not for those who are young. Oftentimes, we take for granted waking up in the morning. We assume we’ll be returning to school or to work, same as the day before, but just as we awoke today, somebody somewhere did not. And while we may derive some comfort from statistics that tell us who’s least likely to die, the fact remains that tragedy could await any one of us. Tragedy could await us any day. Death. Sickness. Life-threatening injuries. Irreparable injuries. The list goes on.
If you fall into one of these categories as someone having suffered or know of someone suffering, there is comfort to be found in Christ. Through prayers and Bible verses, we can find rest in God’s perfect peace.
Here are prayers and verses for tragic injuries:
Prayer for Healing
God,
I humbly present myself to you now, with an earnest plea for healing. I find myself in a position I couldn’t have predicted, dealing with pain that I never wanted. Pain that robs me of sleep or comfort and, sadly, of joy. The only time I seem to have peace of mind is in those rare moments when I don’t feel anything.
Would you heal me, God? Would you make me like new so that I can get back to living again?
In His name, I pray to you now. Amen.
Prayer for Peace of Mind
Heavenly Father,
Peace escapes me. Fearful thoughts invade me. I can hardly think, let alone focus on you. My health is in danger. My body aches. And I just don’t know what to do anymore.
Lord, please intercede on my behalf. Help me see the situation as you do. Give me a better perspective, and renew my spirit.
I thank you, Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Protection
God,
There are people in my life with hobbies and jobs that sometimes put their lives and their health on the line. I want to pray for such people, pray that you would keep watch over their every step. Please keep them from harm as they live their lives. Protect them as you lead with your guiding hands.
Amen.
Prayer for an Uplifted Spirit
Lord,
I find that my spirit has become downcast. I’m depressed. Dealing with loss has left me feeling empty and fearing that this void will always be there. Forever. Is this my new reality?
Is there a way for me to ever feel joy again, to smile?
I have so many questions for you, and right now, I just don’t know the answers. But would you, God, if it pleases, uplift my spirit once again? Somehow, someway.
Amen.
Prayer for Loss
God,
I come to you now praying on behalf of those I know who are contending with loss. A child, a lover, a parent. As we are all born onto this earth, someday, we will all die. But dealing with loss is difficult, God; sometimes we think impossible. Yet, God, I know you as a way-maker, a miracle worker. I don’t know if the voids my loved ones feel will last forever, but I pray that whatever happens, you will provide them comfort and guidance in their time of need. Restore smiles to their faces and joy to their hearts.
Let them know that no matter what has happened, you still love them, and that will never change.
Thank you, God. In your Son’s name, I pray. Amen.
10 Verses to find Comfort with Life-Threatening Injuries
“Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for you are my praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14)
Here, the prophet Jeremiah sets an example of how we should pray, surrendering to God with an earnest plea. He is not only being vulnerable with the Lord, but his words reveal an accompanying trust in what God will do.
“You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)
Peace requires a certain kind of perspective, one with a keen focus on God. This is the difference between perfect peace and earthly peace.
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:17-18)
Our prayers, no matter how joyful or sorrowful, are heard by God. What we must ask ourselves in those times of need is whether or not we believe His word.
“He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
The power of Christ can bring about healing, sometimes complete healing, sometimes none at all. Whatever the case, God has a reason for what He does and what He allows.
“Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)
The burdens of the world can leave us feeling taxed, and so too can the burdens of death or injury. Jesus wants us to see Him and find rest for our souls.
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.” (John 14:27)
This is one of many reminders from Jesus not to succumb to fear. Death can cause us to fear. The same applies to sickness and injury. We fear that things will grow worse or won’t change at all. Rather than fear, we can work to find comfort in God. We don’t always get what we pray for, but sometimes we do. Yet, while we wait in either scenario, there is a peace we can find.
“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
Our natural tendency is to fear, especially when something happens that is out of our control, like a father upset his daughter got hurt while playing a sport. Broken bones don’t always grow back properly. Some injuries aren’t able to be fixed at all. Even with these difficult truths before us, for some reason, God still wants us to focus on Him. He wants us to not worry. Maybe because this life is temporary. Maybe because He is in control. Regardless, He tells us not to worry but instead seek prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. Do we trust Him?
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
God doesn’t simply tell us not to fear. He also promises His help. If we don’t trust Him, we won’t experience the peace he offers, but if we do, then that peace awaits.
“Casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
Fear is a recurring theme in Scripture, both appropriate fear and in appropriate fear. Here we read another reminder to throw away inappropriate fears because God cares for us.
“What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived— God has prepared these things for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
Injuries of all kinds, those that result in death or those that lead to life again, can all cause us to stumble one way or another. Whether we have the injury or someone with the injury, we share in the suffering. Thankfully, God provides a way for us to stand again. We can recover from bodily issues, mental issues, and spiritual ones too. If a loss has been experienced, we can find joy, we can find peace, even if the process requires us to continually go to the throne.
God didn’t promise an easy life, but He does promise a life where He will be with us. We just have to choose Him.
