The sequel to Mel Gibson's box-office hit film The Passion of The Christ may end up being more than one film, according to actor Jim Caviezel.

Caviezel, who will reprise his role as Jesus Christ, appeared on The Shawn Ryan Show and shared that the upcoming film could be split into two films, CBN News reported.

"(Gibson's) been on this for a long, long time... it will be the biggest film in history. It might be two films. Could be three, but I think it's two," Caviezel said.

As reported by CBN News, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection has been in the works for at least the past 10 years.

During a Harvest Crusade in 2016, Gibson told crusade founder Greg Laurie that he wanted to devote his time to developing the screenplay.

"It's called The Resurrection. Of course, that's a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don't want to just do a simple rendering of it. You know, read what happened," Gibson explained.

"But in order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it's about, it's going to take some doing," he continued.

In January, film journalist Jordan Ruimy noted that the screenplay has been undergoing development.

"Gibson has been hard at work on the screenplay with Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace. There have already been six drafts. 'Resurrection' would focus on the twenty-four hours encompassing Jesus' passion and the events that occurred three days between his Crucifixion and Resurrection," Ruimy said.

Although Ruimy said production would likely commence in the spring, Caviezel noted that it could begin in the fall.

The original film, released in 2004, was a major box-office success. It also became the highest-grossing R-rated film in the United States, earning $612 Million on a $30 million budget.
