“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’”
Don’t start like Mary and end up like Martha!
As followers of Jesus, we often start our commitment to serve Jesus and go where he leads out of pure love and devotion to him. We start off like Mary—on our knees, eager to learn about who Jesus is, eager to be in his presence, eager to hear his voice.
Yet, oftentimes, we allow the rush of life—chores, family responsibilities, ministry responsibilities to slowly begin to draw our eyes away from Jesus. As a result, we end up more worried about getting things done for God than being in God’s presence.
But we are never at peace when our relationship with God is not at the center of our lives. As Augustine of Hippo once prayed, “Thou hast made us for thyself, and restless is our heart until it comes to rest in thee.”
Today, set some time aside to rest in God. Draw near to him with your mind, your heart, your soul. The Bible promises us that he will draw close to us as we do that. (James 4:8).
