Catch this audition on Australia’s Got Talent, where a 15-year-old sounds just like Michael Jackson when he sings ‘The Girl is Mine.’
Joel Goncalves, from Brisbane, Australia, seems pretty nervous before his audition. Rightly so, since he has only performed in front of family and friends before and is now getting ready to sing in an auditorium packed with thousands of people!
“The most amount of people I’ve sung in front of is probably 12 to 20 people,” Goncalves says.
In order to help him settle his nerves, the host of Australia’s Got Talent tells Joel to take a deep breath and shake it out before the audition. Once Joel gets on stage and starts singing ‘The Girl is Mine,’ the audience and the judges are blown away.
“Every night, she walks right in my dreams
Since I met her from the start
I'm so proud I am the only one
Who is special in her heart
The girl is mine
The doggone girl is mine
I know she's mine
Because the doggone girl is mine”
“He went from being so scared to just ‘on,’” says the show’s host as he watches the audition from offstage with Joel’s family.
While he’s singing the lyrics to the song, his voice resembles a young Michael Jackson. When the camera cuts to scenes of the audience’s reaction, it is clear that he has won the hearts of all the girls in the audience. After Joel finishes singing, he gets a standing ovation from the room.
“Joel, I didn’t expect that voice,” says one of the judges after the audition. You came out and you were kind of nervous, a bit frigid, and then this beautiful tone came out.”
Joel ended up getting four yeses from the judges. He immediately goes to hug and kiss his mom and sister to celebrate the great accomplishment.
