Members of a Nashville-area church in Tennessee received a welcome surprise over the weekend when Grammy-winning singer Carrie Underwood led them in worship. The eight-time Grammy-winning country artist led Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tenn., in a powerful rendition of Goodness of God, a Dove Award-winning song by Bethel Music that CeCe Winans later covered.

Videos of Underwood leading the church’s choir went viral on Instagram, with fans and non-fans alike praising her heartfelt performance.

“Unexpected blessing this morning, the voice of an angel… I always get to church early to hear the music, and today was a little different!” church member Emily Woods wrote on Instagram.

“This was a sweet surprise, and it blessed me so much,” the Bethel Music fan page administrator wrote. “It’s amazing to hear her sing about God, as her passion is very evident. I love this @bethelmusic song!”

“I wish she’d do a Christian album. Man, that’d be amazing,” another person wrote.

Underwood, the winner of American Idol’s fourth season, has been vocal about her Christian faith.

In 2020, she and her husband, Mike Fisher, recorded a series of videos for I Am Second in which they opened up about their marriage, their careers, and their faith.

“We wanted to do this to share some of our personal journey in hopes that viewers will be inspired by it and maybe even take one more step in pursuing a relationship with God,” Underwood said.

She told Guideposts that she and her husband are raising their children with a strong foundation of faith.

“Mike and I do all we can to raise our two boys with values like the ones I grew up with in Checotah,” Underwood said. “Down-to-earth, church on Sundays, plenty of grass and trees and space outside for them to roam. At night, when we put the boys to bed, we pray out loud with them. Just talking to God, letting them know He hears their every word.”

Her 2005 song, Jesus Take the Wheel, soared to No. 1 on multiple Billboard country charts.
