God Reigns

This devotional was written by Jim Liebelt

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. —Isaiah 9:6-8

Today is the national election day in the United States of America. Estimates are that some 150 million people will cast their votes. Some candidates will win, and others will lose. New laws will be established, and others will be abolished. Because of the diversity of political leanings that exist in our country, no American will get everything they may hope for from this election.

Still, being able to vote – whether you choose to vote or not – is a good thing. Personally, I’m grateful that we live in a country where the voice of its citizens is sought and heard through the election process.

But, I’m even more thankful that God is on His throne. Through the work of Jesus, His kingdom has broken through to us, has been established, and is on the move across the globe.

With God as King, whatever circumstances we face in our lives are part of His story and His work in our world and in our lives. Whether we are on the peak of the mountain or in the depths of the valley, God is present, and we can have the confidence that He will accomplish everything that is in His plan for our world, our country, and each of our lives.

It’s reassuring to know that God is never handcuffed by election results. Term limits don’t apply to Him. He’s always on the job! He reigns in justice and righteousness. He never sleeps, never does wrong, and never disappoints – forever and ever.

While we have reason to hope in elections, elected officials, laws, governments, and our nation, remember that our ultimate trust and hope does not rest in these. Tomorrow, whether you wake up happy, sad, furious, or indifferent about the election results, put your trust and hope in God who reigns as our King!

GOING DEEPER:

1. How does knowing that God reigns as King inspire you?

2. Is your view of God as King influenced by our nation’s election results? Why or Why not?
