The issue of abortion and the fight for life has been at the center of our national discourse for years, particularly after Roe v. Wade made abortion legal in 1973. Since then, pro-life advocates, many of whom are Christians, have been speaking out in defense of life. There is no doubt that many Christian leaders believe valuing life from conception is a core principle of Christianity.
Many in the Christian community have been encouraged by the progress made in the pro-life movement in the last few months. Many states have tightened restrictions on abortion and put laws in place that protect life. Ultimately, these Christian leaders believe that life should be protected as a gift from God. Here is what ten Christian leaders had to say on abortion and the issues pertaining to preserving life.

It's not the woman's body. It's in the woman's body. That's not the same."

2. Mother Teresa
Slide 2 of 10A few different pro-life quotes from Mother Teresa:
"Abortion kills twice. It kills the body of the baby and it kills the conscience of the mother. Abortion is profoundly anti-women."
"A nation that kills its children in the womb has lost its soul."
"The so-called right to abortion has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience."

This is an explicit recognition that the unborn is a person with rights of her own. But that same woman who is prosecuted and jailed for endangering her child is perfectly free to abort her child. In America today, it is illegal to harm your preborn child, but it is perfectly legal to kill him.”

4. Gianna Jessen, abortion survivor
Slide 4 of 10“The best thing I can show you to defend life is my life. It has been a great gift. I have met other survivors of abortion. They are all thankful for Life … when I speak, I speak not only for myself, but for the other survivors … and also those who cannot yet speak … Today a baby is a baby when convenient. It is tissue or otherwise when the time is not right. A baby is a baby when miscarriage takes place at two, three, four months. Why is that? I see no difference.”

6. Dinesh D'Souza
Slide 6 of 10“In my view, the pro-life movement at this point should focus on seeking to reduce the number of abortions. At times it will require political education and legal fights, at times it will require education and the establishment of alternatives to abortion, such as adoption centers. Unfortunately, such measures are sometimes opposed by so-called hard-liners in the pro-life movement. These hard-liners are fools. Because they want to outlaw all abortions, they refuse to settle for stopping some abortions; the consequence is that they end up preventing no abortions.”

7. Rev. Franklin Graham
Slide 7 of 10"Abortion is a sin and is clearly murder in God’s eyes. The people who perform it have no conscience, so I’m not at all surprised that they would be selling organs, tissue, and body parts from babies. Planned Parenthood should be put out of business—they’ve done enough damage. Sin has an enormous price. Our nation will one day have to answer to God for the millions of innocent lives taken by abortion, and that applies to every politician who voted for and defended abortion. Thankfully though, no sin is too great for God’s forgiveness—even murder."

8. Pastor John Piper
Slide 8 of 10"The root cause of abortion is the failure to be satisfied in God as our supreme love. And, for all the great legal work that needs to be done to protect human life, the greatest work that needs to be done is to spread a passion -- a satisfaction for the supremacy of God in all things. That's our calling."

9. Russell Moore
Slide 9 of 10Comments on the falling abortion rate:
"We should celebrate all of that. At the same time, though, we ought to have mixed feelings. Our celebration should be joined to lament. Even one abortion ought to prompt us to grief. Every life lost, every life harmed, rips at the image of God himself. Every life lost is a horror and an unspeakable tragedy. The rate of 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women of child-bearing age is better than what it has been, but it is still so terrifying in scope that we should weep. And then we should press forward, making the case everywhere that human life does not consist in its “usefulness” or in its perceived power. Human life bears inherent dignity because human life reflects the life of God himself."

10. Dr. James Dobson
Slide 10 of 10"Once born, the deliberate destruction of life is unthinkable. Why, then, is such a baby considered "fair game" when he resides within his mother's uterus? It is true that the law sometimes recognizes a different status for those born versus those unborn, but the law in those instances is wrong. There is no biological or moral basis for this distinction. Infanticide merely seems acceptable when we don't have to witness the death process of a tiny victim we have not yet met."
