20 Scripture Verses to Pray for Your Marriage

20 Scripture Verses to Pray for Your Marriage

The Bible tells us the very definition of marriage and that two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). We know God’s Word to be true, but if we are human and honest, we will often admit that marriage is hard. It doesn’t always seem like two really are better than one, does it?

Making our marriage stronger takes intentionality, and I believe, God's Word and prayer. When we are intentionally humbling ourselves and praying for our spouse, our heart grows more soft and pliable. God is able to work in my heart as well as in my spouse.

Here are 20 Bible verses about marriage that I use to pray Scripture over our relationship and my spouse. God's Word can transform your marriage!

  • 14. Ephesians 5:21-30

    14. Ephesians 5:21-30

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body." Ephesians 5:21-30

Lord, may we joyfully submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. May we love like Jesus.

Lord, when we come to places of disagreement, as all marriages encounter, remind us that our enemy is not flesh and blood. Our enemy is not our spouse. We wrestle against the rulers and principalities of evil. Grow us in unity and together in Christ.

    16. Philippians 2:3-7

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:3-7

Lord, help us to not do anything out of selfish ambition. Give us humble hearts toward one another, not looking to our own interests, but to the interests of our spouse. Give us the mind of Christ.
