Our kids are a special blessing from the Lord. He gives us a fierce love for them that is powerful and terrifying at the same time. When they hurt, we hurt; once we become parents, it is as though our heart is out walking around in the world all on its own.
Sadly, we live in a world where evil, sickness, and death all have power. They are never the last word but their presence is alarming to every person. It's especially trying when this fallen world impacts our children. It requires so much faith in God's goodness to know that he is with us even when we walk our child through the valley of the shadow of death.
When I became a mom, I was crippled for a long time with such fear because I knew that I alone did not have the power to protect my children from sickness and harm. I had to lean into God to grow my faith so I had the confidence I needed to trust that he is with me and my children in such an unrelenting and tangible way.
The first time I felt this presence was when our son woke up in the night unable to breathe due to a very acute and abrupt bout of croup. His life was at risk and there was almost nothing I could do to change his circumstances. As I got in the ambulance with my child, I felt something unexpected: peace! This was the type of scenario that I had dreaded, yet here I was in it, not falling to pieces. God was with me.
Now, in this season, we have been asked to foster a baby that is a miracle baby! God gave her a chance to live when she was at death's door but she has some health challenges that she will have to manage for her lifetime. Being a mom to a child in the hospital with a team of doctors and a long list of concerns about what the future could hold is the last thing that I ever wanted. For many years, the common cold struck fear in my anxious heart. But God.
Yet I am reminded that despite my natural fear, every child needs a caregiver, even those who have health challenges. God has asked me to have faith for her life to be good, no matter what difficulties come our way. He invites me to trust that love is worth it even if life is cut short or we are given many years on this Earth. He also tells me that by faith healing and miracles do come! He did many miracles for this life to be! He will be faithful in her story and our story as we walk together into the future.
These are hard things to believe, trust, and walk through, but God is a great God. While the struggle is real, his power is still greater than any challenge we may face. He loves us and our kids and promises hope and a future for us here on Earth—one that continues and abounds in the life to come. Parenting through the hard requires us to embrace the long view, seeing that God works through trials and also sees beyond our years here to a good and beautiful eternity with Him. Our temporal and satisfaction-hungry world only focuses on the moment, but we serve an eternal God.
As you walk through the hard, here are some verses and prayers to remind your heart that God is good and with us even in our darkest moments.
1. He Gives Health and Rest
1. He Gives Health and Rest
SLIDE 1 OF 4
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:28-30
Father, the burden of sickness that we are facing feels heavy. I am burdened and weary. I am scared and feel alone. The chaos and darkness feel greater than the goodness. Meet me here and bring health and rest. Exchange my fear and give me the faith I need to expect good things as I walk through a dark circumstance. Help me to rest in the knowledge of your sovereignty; all things exist because of your power. Remind me of your truth as my soul struggles under the weight of my circumstances. Give my child comfort and healing in every way possible. Let your grace abound. Meet our needs with your loving kindness. Amen.
2. He Is a God that Does the Unexplainable
2. He Is a God that Does the Unexplainable
SLIDE 2 OF 4
"He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.'" Mark 5:34
God, I thank you that you are a God that does the unexplainable so we might believe and give you the glory. You honor our faith and respond with action. Jesus let faith arise in my heart for my child! Let me have faith that you are doing a miracle even now. Let me have the peace I need to be a faithful rock to my family and community. By your grace, bring healing to my child, and don't let sickness have the last word. Do what only you can do. Amen.

3. God Is Gracious
3. God Is Gracious
SLIDE 3 OF 4
"Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled." Psalm 6:2
God, we know that we are undeserving of your grace! Life and the chance to live it to the fullest is an expression of your abundant grace. Not only have you given us life you have given us the hope of eternity spent with you. You are a giver of good gifts because you love us. We ask that you would by grace bring healing in my home. Let us taste and know your goodness in this real and tangible way. Let us know your grace as you provide us the peace we need to face every trial this life brings. By grace give us faith, offer us comfort, and let your love go ahead of us. Amen.
4. God Gives Us a Community
4. God Gives Us a Community
SLIDE 4 OF 4
"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven." James 5:14-15
God, we thank you that in our hardest moments you are with us and you call the body of Christ to stand alongside us. I thank God for those who are praying with me for your goodness and healing to come alive in my home. Hear our prayer and be faithful to provide all that we need. Give me wisdom on who to ask and when to ask for help. Let me child be lifted up in prayer and forgive us for any way we have not followed your way. Amen.
