7 New Family Movies and TV Series Streaming in July

Let’s be honest: We all need a good movie during election season.

With negative campaign ads, constant news coverage, and divisive rhetoric, even the most cheerful can feel disheartened.

And it’s only July!

Thankfully, the major streaming services have plenty to offer families this month, perfect for lifting our spirits and helping us find a bit of peace. Films have the power to remind us of the ideals in life — hope, unity, and the simple pleasures that make our days brighter.

Here are seven great options for families this month.

  • Christmas in July

    5. Great American Christmas in July (Great American Family/Pure Flix)

If the hot weather has you down, then Great American Media’s Christmas movies could be the perfect remedy to bring some holiday cheer to your summer. Both Great American Family and Great American Pure Flix feature dozens of holiday-themed films this month, including A Christmas … Present (Candace Cameron Bure), Bringing Christmas Home (Jill Wagner), and B&B Merry (Jen Lilley, Jesse Hutch). “Christmas in July” may seem like a quirky new thing, but it actually dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1940, there even was a movie with that exact title.

  • IF

    6. IF (Home Video, Paramount Plus)

A young tween girl rediscovers her imagination and her joy when pretend friends from her childhood suddenly come back to life. It’s a live-action/animated fantasy film that follows the story of a girl, Brea, who loses her innocence when her father lands in the hospital, only to regain it when she runs across several imaginary creatures living upstairs -- a butterfly, a furry monster, and so on. It’s a movie with solid lessons for families, although its inclusion of mild language may repel some parents. (ClearPlay and VidAngel offer filters.)
