7 Ways to Share Your Faith Through Everyday Activities

7 Ways to Share Your Faith Through Everyday Activities

Evangelism can be daunting for many of us. So often, we do not know how to go about sharing our faith in today’s world. Do we knock on people’s doors and give them gospel tracts?

Are we supposed to just invite friends and neighbors to church? We do not know what to do, so we struggle to even speak about Jesus in our daily lives.

The problem is that in Western countries like America, our culture is infiltrated with a sense that our lives should be divided into secular and sacred areas.

In the public (or secular) sphere, we can talk about the weather and general interests. But faith in Jesus? That is solely placed in the private (or sacred) sphere. Even Christians can be influenced by this division of life.

We know Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). But how do we get over the ingrained cultural idea that we should keep our faith private?

Instead of thinking we need a new program or should keep evangelism inside church walls, believers need to start living and sharing their faith in everyday life. We are already doing certain activities each day.

Why not incorporate talking about the Bible and how the Lord saves us? By including Christ in our daily discussions and activities, we can begin to feel more comfortable talking about the gospel.

Each person’s rhythm of life looks different, so we need to try to find ways that we can talk about the gospel where we are and through what we are already doing.

The following list of ideas provides ways to share our faith through common activities. These ideas serve as starting places to live a holistic faith that brings Jesus into all parts of life — not just in our private, quiet times.

    1. Carry Out Job Duties with Excellence

Paul gave surprising instructions to the Christian servants of his time. He encouraged them to “Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people” (Ephesians 6:7, NLT; also see Colossians 3:23).

These were individuals who often had to work under uncomfortable and even unjust conditions. They were to work with the focus they were serving Christ, trusting He would reward them for the good they accomplished (Ephesians 6:8).

When employees carry out their job duties with excellence, they provide a living testimony to others. Employers and others will take note of their diligence.

At times, a Christian’s work ethic could lead others to ask them why they are so willing to do their best, especially if the job is not the most glamorous or provides meager pay (Matthew 5:16). In those moments, a Christian receives an opportunity to speak of their faith in Jesus.

As we go about our day doing tasks for our jobs, we should seek to do our best. The Lord is our ultimate Master, and we want to bring glory to Him. People might not always take notice.

However, when people do see our hard work done with excellence and ask or comment about our work, we can declare why we complete our jobs the way we do: because of trust in our Lord and Savior.

    2. Invite Coworkers to Lunch

In addition to doing our best at work, we can also share our faith through the everyday activities of going to work and lunch. Some jobs have strict rules about evangelism while on duty.

However, when employees are not on duty, they can talk about what they believe and matters of faith. One way to share our faith naturally is to invite coworkers to eat lunch with us.

Not only will we get to know more about them and what they believe, but we will have numerous opportunities to speak naturally about our faith in Christ. The conversations do not even have to be on the topic of religion. We can mention aspects of our faith in any discussion if we do so thoughtfully.

For example, a coworker could talk about the various injustices in the world — wars, poverty, human trafficking, and racial discrimination. We can use this as an opportunity to talk about our trust that one day, all things will be made right when Jesus returns (Revelation 19:11-16). Justice will be done because the Lord is just and holy.

Even a conversation that is not specifically about the Bible, Jesus, or faith can turn into an opportunity to tell others about our assured hope.

    3. Talk to People as You Walk Through Your Neighborhood

Going on walks around the neighborhood, we are bound to run into a neighbor or someone new. Lots of us already do this when we go on a morning walk or take the dogs out for a quick loop around the block. Naturally, we will have opportunities to speak to others about matters of faith.

Sometimes, conversations with neighbors can seem surface-level. We talk about the weather or ask about how a person’s family is doing.

Topics like these are fine to engage in and can even break the ice when we meet someone new. We should make it a priority, though, to practice talking about our faith in Jesus in everyday situations.

Perhaps a neighbor asks about how we have been doing or what we did during the week. We could reply by including a few activities that involved the Lord, such as spending time in Bible study or doing a service project with our church. This is not to brag about how “spiritual” we are but to provide open points of discussion about matters of belief.

We might tell our neighbor how much we have learned from studying a specific book of the Bible or are excited about a new devotional book.

This makes the discussion more natural instead of trying to force it into a mechanical presentation of the gospel. The more we practice talking about our trust in Christ daily, the more it will come naturally to converse with others about the gospel.

    4. Demonstrate Kindness as a Customer

People working in customer service positions often face criticism and harsh judgment from customers. These are the people who bag our groceries, take our orders at restaurants, or provide assistance when we are returning items. Instead of venting our impatience or frustration at them, we can choose to show Christ’s love.

Those who work in customer service are individuals made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). They have value as human beings and are equally in need of knowing Jesus’ saving grace.

Offering a kind smile, saying “thank you,” and showing genuine interest in them as people can make a major difference in their lives. By treating them kindly, we remind them that they are worth being treated well.

Jesus told His disciples that others would recognize them by their love — not by hateful criticism or impatient attitudes (John 13:35). When we treat others with love and dignity, we follow Jesus’ command to love others (John 13:34).

People who work in customer service may even take notice and wonder why we act the way we do. If they ask us, we will be able to give a reason for our actions fueled by faith (see 1 Peter 3:15).

Most of us visit grocery stores and other retail stores regularly. As we go about our days, let us seek to show kindness to those who work in customer service, providing a testimony of Jesus’ love.

    5. Offer Genuine Prayers

Another way to share our faith in everyday activities is when we pray. Some of us can get into the habit of saying the same things when we pray aloud during meals or with children at bedtime

However, our prayers should be authentic. When we pray honestly from the heart, we focus on praying as a way of talking with God. In effect, we demonstrate what an authentic relationship with the Lord looks like.

Children pay attention to what their parents say and do. As they hear their parents talking about the importance of Jesus in their lives, they will also see this truth lived out if parents incorporate their faith into everyday life, such as through prayer

Even if all they see are their parents bowing their heads or kneeling beside their beds each day, this can be a powerful testimony that points them to the gospel.

The same is true of friends and other guests in the home. Individuals can tell the difference between showy prayers and prayers from the heart that demonstrate a genuine relationship with Jesus. Gratitude and praise offered to the Lord in simple and honest words can leave a profound impact on others.

A lot of believers will likely share a meal with someone throughout the week, whether with family, friends, or neighbors. We can live our faith before others by authentically talking to God before meals or while praying with children before bedtime.

    6. Show Your Love of Jesus Through Home Activities

Our homes are meant to be places where people can come together for fellowship, meals, rest, and loving support. They are places that we inhabit daily and spend a lot of time upkeeping through cleaning and making repairs.

Since most of us will have people in our homes on a fairly consistent basis, we should make it a hospitable place that reflects our love of Christ.

As we cook, clean, garden, and decorate our homes, we can invite Christ into these activities. When we do, we will find many ways to serve others and point people to the gospel.

For example, we could make extra food while cooking a meal to send to someone who is sick or suffering. Such a simple act can demonstrate love and care for others.

We could also include a few faith-based decorations in our homes. When visitors or family members see a cross or a piece of art with a Bible verse on our walls, they get a glimpse of what we believe and cherish. Such items could lead to conversations about the Bible and faith in Christ.

There are opportunities daily to be involved in the lives of others, including our family, friends, and neighbors. As we encounter these people in and around our homes, we can serve others with love and invest in their wellbeing. By doing so, we provide a tangible expression of Jesus’ loving service in coming to die for us (Matthew 20:28).

    7. Season Every Conversation with Truth and Grace

People generally interact with others daily, whether in person, on the phone, or online. Even if the conversations are short or strictly related to our jobs, we have opportunities every day to use our words to encourage others and point them to Christ. We do so by seasoning every conversation with truth and grace.

Going about our days accomplishing normal tasks, we can talk to individuals to impact them for Christ. In David Platt’s book Gospel Threads: Weaving Good News Into Everyday Life, written with David Burnette, he gives the example of missionaries who weave gospel truths into their everyday conversations with Muslims.

As he wrote, “In every conversation, in every business dealing, in every meeting, they look for opportunities to speak about who God is and what he has done for them in Christ” (Radical, 2017, p. 2).

The rest of the book gives detailed steps on how Christians can do this, focusing on different parts of the gospel message. This book is worth reading if a Christian wants to grow in his or her capacity to leverage everyday words and actions to point people to Jesus.

However, we all can start by speaking about our faith naturally with others. We can do so by being open and attentive to the opportunities already present each day to mention topics related to the truth of the Bible and the grace God has shown us in sending His Son to die for us.

As we approach our daily jobs and tasks, we should not think that talking about Jesus is reserved only for missionaries, evangelists, or pastors. All believers can share their faith if they are willing to be intentional in their everyday activities and conversations.
