5 Biblical Reminders about Patience When Impatience Overtakes You

Patience is a vital virtue. Yet, it can feel elusive when you’re faced with situations that test your endurance. Life is full of waiting – from waiting for appointments to waiting in traffic jams. It’s also full of delays that can affect everything from your relationships to your work. No matter what frustrating circumstances you’re dealing with, impatience can sneak up on you and rob you of your peace. But the Bible offers you timeless wisdom about the importance of patience in your life. Let's explore what the Bible says about how to be patient. 1. Trust in God’s timing.

The book of Ecclesiastes offers profound wisdom about the nature of time and the seasons of life. It reminds you that there is a time for everything – including seasons of waiting and patience. Ecclesiastes 3:1 points out: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This verse encourages you to trust in God’s timing, knowing that God unfolds the events of your life according to his perfect plan. When you’re feeling impatient, it’s natural to want events to happen according to your timetable. You may grow frustrated when your prayers seem to go unanswered or when you don’t see immediate results from your efforts. However, Ecclesiastes reminds you that God operates outside of your limited understanding of time. His perspective is eternal, and he knows the beginning from the end.

Trusting in God’s timing requires a shift in your perspective. Instead of focusing solely on your desires and deadlines, you can choose to surrender to God’s sovereign will. This doesn’t mean that you become passive or resigned to your circumstances. Instead, it means recognizing that God’s timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t align with your own plans. One powerful biblical example of trusting in God’s timing is the story of Abraham and Sarah. Despite their advanced age and Sarah’s barrenness, God promised them a son. However, years passed without the fulfillment of this promise, and Sarah grew impatient. In her impatience, she suggested that Abraham have a child with her maidservant, Hagar, leading to strife and complications within their family (Genesis 16). Yet, in God’s perfect timing, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac, the son of promise, just as God had foretold (Genesis 21). This story reminds you that God’s timing is worth waiting for, even when it requires patience and endurance.

When you trust in God’s timing, you can rest in the assurance in Romans 8:28 that: “…in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” So, when you’re feeling impatient, trust in God’s timing. Surrender your own timeline to God, with the confidence that God will answer your prayers at the appointed time.

    2. Ask the Holy Spirit for help.

As you work to develop patience in your life, one invaluable resource available to you is the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 lists patience as one of the fruits of the Spirit. This means that as you cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit in your life, God’s Spirit produces patience within you as a natural outgrowth of his presence and influence. Developing patience as a fruit of the Spirit begins with inviting the Holy Spirit to work in your heart and mind. Through prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to help you become a more patient person.

One practical way to develop patience through the Holy Spirit is by spending time with God through prayer and meditation. That will help you notice God’s presence with you, which will give you the peace you need to be patient as you deal with the challenges you. Another key aspect of developing patience as a fruit of the Spirit is by surrendering control to God. Often, impatience stems from a desire to control outcomes and circumstances according to your own preferences and timetable. However, when you relinquish control to God and trust God’s purposes, you’re free to patiently wait for God’s timing and direction in your life.

Developing patience also involves being compassionate with other people. When you recognize that everyone is on their own spiritual journey and is facing their own challenges, it becomes easier to be patient in your interactions with difficult people. Ultimately, developing patience as a fruit of the Spirit is a lifelong journey that requires intentionality and reliance on God’s grace. As you walk in step with the Spirit, you’ll experience his transforming power and grow the fruit of patience in every area of your life.

    3. Wait for God.

In moments of impatience, you’re often tempted to take matters into your own hands and rush ahead of God’s plan. However, Psalm 27:14 reminds you: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” When you wait with hope for God to help you, you demonstrate your faith and strengthen it, as well. It’s not always easy, especially when you’re facing uncertainty or adversity. You may be tempted to seek quick solutions or take matters into your own hands, but God calls you to wait patiently for his timing.

Waiting for God doesn’t mean sitting idly by and doing nothing. Instead, it’s an active waiting – a posture of faith and expectation. As you wait, you can pray, seek God’s guidance and remain open to what God leads you to do. The story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis shows the power of waiting on God. After being sold into slavery by his brothers and unjustly imprisoned in Egypt, Joseph endured years of hardship and uncertainty. Yet, through it all, he remained faithful and trusted in God’s plan for his life. In God’s perfect timing, Joseph was elevated to a position of power and authority, becoming instrumental in saving his family and the nation of Egypt from famine (Genesis 37-50).

Like Joseph, you can wait for God with confidence. Even when the waiting seems long and difficult, you can take heart and find strength in God’s presence with you. God will give you peace and everything else you need as you wait for him – and your faith will grow during the time you wait, as well.

  • 4. Remember God’s promises.

    4. Remember God’s promises.

When you’re feeling impatient, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s promises and become consumed by your circumstances. Whether you’re waiting for healing, provision, or direction, it’s essential to anchor your faith in the unchanging truth of God’s Word and his promises to you there. The Bible reminds you in 2 Corinthians 1:20: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” This verse is a powerful reminder that when you place your faith in God, you will see God’s promises fulfilled in any circumstances.

God makes this wonderful promise to you in Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” This verse assures you that God has an important purpose for your life – in every hill and valley situation you go through. When you’re feeling impatient, let God’s promises renew your strength and hope. Meditate on God’s Word, pray it back to him, and declare his promises over your life. As you saturate your mind and heart with the truth of God’s Word, you’ll find that your perspective shifts from focusing on your circumstances to trusting in God’s power and trustworthiness.

So, when you’re feeling impatient, take hold of God’s promises and cling to them with faith. As you trust in God’s promises, you will experience God’s peace and provision in every area of your life.

  • 5. Practice patience even in affliction.

    5. Practice patience even in affliction.

Life is full of challenges that can test your patience. Whether you’re facing financial difficulties, health issues, or relational struggles, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and impatient for relief. However, God calls you to persevere and stay connected to him in prayer even in the most challenging situations. Romans 12:12 urges you to: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” This verse reminds you that patience is not just about enduring difficult circumstances, but maintaining an attitude of hope and trust in God’s faithfulness.

Practicing patience in affliction involves relying on God’s strength. It’s about choosing to trust God’s promises even when your circumstances seem bleak. Instead of allowing fear or anxiety to dictate your response, you can look for the light of hope God is shining into darkness. The Bible story of Job emphasizes patience in affliction. Despite experiencing unimaginable loss and suffering, Job remained patiently steadfast in his faith and trust in God. In the middle of his affliction, Job declares in Job 13:15: “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him…”. Through his patience and endurance, Job witnessed God’s faithfulness and restoration in his life.

Like Job, you can practice patience in affliction by looking beyond your circumstances to God. Instead of allowing difficult times to shake your faith, you can use them as opportunities to grow closer to God and deepen your trust in him. As you remain patient in affliction, lean into your relationship with God and trust him to help you.

In conclusion, when you’re feeling impatient, it’s easy to lose sight of the biblical principles that remind you of the importance of patience in your life. However, by reminding yourself of what the Bible says about patience, you can learn to be patient even in the most challenging circumstances. God’s timing and plans for you are worth waiting for!
