5 Myths Christians Need to Debunk about God

There are endless myths about God in the modern day. Spanning the course of centuries, many people have believed these lies about God. The only place we can know the truth about God is through the Bible. The Bible is useful for all areas of our lives as the Apostle Paul says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (1 Timothy 3:16-17).
Rather than trying to seek out facts about God from the web, false religions, or secular books, we need to look to the Bible. By consulting the Bible, we will begin to learn the truth about God. We will learn about His nature, His kindness, and His love. This is vital in order to truly know Him on a personal level. Without a true knowledge of God, one will never know about salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.
Continuing to believe myths about God will result in having a faulty view of Him. This is dangerous as it can lead people to never place faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord. Furthermore, it can lead to people not viewing Jesus as God because many lies teach that only the Father is God. It is within our responsibility to be aware of myths about God and be able to refute them in order to help others to know the truth.

1. God Is Like a Magical Genie
Slide 1 of 5A commonly held myth about God is that He is like a magical genie. Many people think God is a magical being in the sky that grants wishes and will give them whatever they want. This is not true as God is not like a magical genie nor does He grant wishes. When we look at the Bible, we see that God is our wonderful Creator, Sustainer, and Protector (Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 54:4; Psalm 119:114).
God does not grant magical wishes, but He does answer prayers. He answers prayers in one of three ways—yes, no, or wait. Any prayer that does not align with His Will for our life will be answered with a no. While there are many people who think God never answers their prayer because it does not happen doesn't mean that He didn’t answer it. It just means He answered it with a no.
It can be hard to deal with a no, yet we need to trust God. His thoughts and ways are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8-9). It needs to be mentioned that just because we ask for something in prayer does not mean God will say yes. We need to praise Him no matter what His answer is because He truly knows best. Place all of your prayers at His feet, but don’t believe the lie that He is a magical genie.

2. God Doesn’t Care about His Creation
Slide 2 of 5Another myth that is circulating in the world today is that God doesn’t care about His creation. There is a group of people who believe that God created the earth, everything on the earth, humankind, and the solar system, yet He left. This group of people practice deism. Within this kind of belief system, God left the earth and everything else, including humankind, because He wasn’t interested and didn’t care what would happen to His creation.
This is of course, not true in any sense. God does care about His creation. He tends for His creation, cares for it, and ensures the sun rises every morning (Jeremiah 31:35; Matthew 5:45). Moreover, He cares about every single animal and notices when even a sparrow falls to the ground (Matthew 10:29-31).
Humankind is unique amongst the rest of God’s creation because we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27). Why would God do this if He didn’t care about us? The matter of Him creating us attests to how much He cares about us. God’s care is also shown to us by Him sending His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16-17). If God didn’t care about humankind, He would have destroyed us a long time ago and never brought redemption into the picture.
As it is, we all have the opportunity to place faith in Jesus in order to be forgiven of our sins, a new start, and eternal life. None of this would have been possible without the love of the Father. The Father deeply cares about us and we never need to doubt His love. He is our good, good Father and He loves us unconditionally.

3. God and Jesus Are Different Persons
Slide 3 of 5A huge myth about God is that Him and Jesus are two different persons. While there are many people who hold this view, it is not biblical. The Father and Jesus are two distinct persons; however, to say God and Jesus are two separate persons would imply Jesus is not God. As we learn from the Bible, Jesus fully taught the truth that He was God in the flesh (John 10:30).
The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all God. Neither member is superior to another. Three distinct persons, yet one God. Throughout the Bible, we see the Trinity being taught. For one example, Genesis 1:26 reads, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’”
From Genesis 1:26, we see God says, “Let us.” He is not referring to one single person. Rather this points us to the Trinity. Another time we see mention of the Trinity is at the Tower of Babel when the Lord says, “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other” (Genesis 11:7). Yet again, the Lord says, “Let us.”
We would be wise to pay heed to these facts and not to separate Jesus from God. Jesus is worshiped, praised, and respected as God throughout the New Testament (Matthew 14:33, 28:9; John 1:1, 8:58, 20:28; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3). Through Jesus’ seven “I am” statements, we also see Him as declaring Himself to be God (John 6:35, 8:12, 10:7, 10:11-14, 11:25, 14:6, 15:1-5). As one can see, God and Jesus are one in the same as Jesus is a member of the Trinity and therefore, God.

4. God Only Select Specific People to Be Saved
Slide 4 of 5The idea that God only selects specific people to be saved stems from pride. There are not only a few select people chosen by God. Rather, God has predestined all people to be saved (John 3:16-17). Everyone is not automatically saved as each person has to choose to place faith in Jesus.
Salvation is open to all, not only to a select few. Predestination is a popular subject within theology; however, many people are holding incorrect views when it comes to this topic. Instead of believing that God only calls a select few, we need to know that God calls all of us to be saved. No matter your socioeconomic status, ethnic background, or past, God wants you to come to know Him (1 Timothy 2:4).
To believe that only a select number of people are chosen by God is not biblical. What is biblical is that God has chosen all of us before the creation of the world. This is shown to us in the Apostle Paul’s words, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves” (Ephesians 1:4-6).

5. God Is Not Real
Slide 5 of 5A final myth about God that is prevalent in the world today is that God is not real. The idea that God is not real has been in society throughout time. Many people reject God after a traumatic event or they grew up in a situation where believing in God was seen as childlike. The truth is that God is real and He is eternal (Isaiah 40:28). Only He is able to save us, give us forgiveness, and redeem our souls (Ephesians 1:7).
The Bible contains the true words of God and we need to respect the Bible as the sacred holy book He has given us. Through the Bible, we learn about the truth of God, how He is real, and how He is beyond time (Romans 1:18-20; John 1:18; Revelation 4:11; Psalm 90:2). God created all of us and dearly loves us without conditions. For those who reject the existence of God, we need to pray for them and ask God to help them open their eyes to the truth.
Additionally, we can also share the Gospel with them and point them to Jesus. While we cannot make anyone believe, we can share the truth of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. God is real and He is the One all of us will have to answer to one day. In His hands are both Heaven and hell. All people who continue in their unbelief and rejection of God will be eternally separated from Him in darkness. At this time, they will finally understand that God is real, He is alive, and He is just.
There are many myths about God and we would be wise to speak out against them. A few of these myths include the idea that God is like a genie, God doesn’t care about His creation, God and Jesus are different persons, God only selects a few people to be saved, and God is not real. All of these false beliefs are not true and nobody needs to believe them nor endorse them. Instead of believing these lies, we need to help others know the truth.
