6 Signs God Is Speaking to You—And You Might Be Missing Them

God’s main way of speaking to us is in the Bible. Since the Bible is God’s complete revelation to us, it is the best place to go when we need to hear from Him. Sadly, many of us do not read the Bible each day, leaving us feeling far from Him and lost.

When we feel alone and lost on life's journey and unsure where God is directing us, it's important to remember that God is always talking to us! It would be nice if God would speak to us out of a thundercloud, but it does not often happen today. Instead, His voice can be heard in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-13).

Here are six signs God is speaking to you, but you might be missing them.

1. You Feel You Are Lacking Something in Life

When we study the Bible, we learn the importance of God in our lives. Our spiritual life will suffer if we don’t walk closely with Him and ignore what He tells us. Sin becomes harder to defend against when we are not diligent in connecting with God. We will also begin to feel like we lack something in our life. Whenever we think we lack something in life, we try to fill it with various, oftentimes useless, things.

We could try to fill it with friends, relationships, exercise, work accomplishments, or hobbies, yet none of these things ever fill the void. Instead, we feel more empty. This is because God is trying to speak to us at these moments. He is drawing us to Him, yet we are missing it. Since God is not being direct, we are unsure what he is trying to convey.

When you feel you are lacking something, turn to God. He is the only One who can give your soul what it needs (Psalm 107:9). Rather than turning to things that will not satisfy you, turn to Him. He speaks to you through this emptiness and tells you to return to Him. Trust in His ability to bring hope back into your heart and to set your feet on steady ground (Psalm 40:1-3).

2. You Are Hungry for the Word

God might be speaking to you if you are hungry for the Word. Sometimes, we can shrug off this hunger because we are busy with other things. However, like physical hunger, our spiritual hunger will only intensify if we keep pushing off our spiritual hunger. Therefore, read the Bible daily if you are hungry for the Word. Take time out of your morning to spend in the Bible and talk with the Lord in prayer.

Psalm 119:105 tells us the importance of the Bible, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” As this Psalm states, God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. It will guide us and instruct us in the way we should go. If we are constantly turning a deaf ear to our spiritual hunger, we will never hear what God is trying to tell us. Continuing down this path, we will only find ourselves drifting further away from God.

While many people will insist God can speak to us in various ways outside the Bible, the Bible is our perfect way of hearing from Him. Everything written in it is divinely inspired (2 Peter 1:20-21). We cannot say that about devotionals, sermons, or advice from friends. These resources and people can be helpful, but we must always weigh everything against Scripture. If what a devotional, sermon, or friend says contradicts Scripture, God is not speaking to you.

3. God is Bringing New People into Your Life

Two friends having coffee together, laughing; seven pocket prayers to pray for your friends.

When God tries to get our attention, He often sends new people into our lives. Sometimes, this means God sends believers to encourage us; other times, He sends unbelievers. Unbelievers are sent to help us teach them the Gospel, be their friend, extend Jesus’ love, and disciple those who believe in Him. In other words, having new people in our lives can be a way that God is speaking to us, but it is also a way that He is teaching us new things about ourselves, others, and Him.

If you have noticed a new person in your life, stop and think about what God might be trying to tell you. If a new believer has come into your life and is a potential mentor, wait on the Lord. It could be this is someone He wants in your life to help you learn more about Him. On the other hand, you may become a mentor to someone else, such as an unbeliever who has recently placed faith in the Lord.

Go to Him in prayer and ask for His direction. Again, please weigh what these individuals say against Scripture. For an unbeliever coming into your life, you will already know they probably won’t be knowledgeable of Scripture; however, this is a perfect chance for you to teach the Gospel in a way that is meaningful to them. Allow the Lord to speak to you through these lessons and submit to His directions (1 Peter 5:6).

4. He Is Opening a Door

God can speak to us by opening a door for us. A new opportunity might have opened to you, yet you are missing God’s hand in your life. Every good and perfect gift is from our Heavenly Father (James 1:17). Therefore, if God has placed a beautiful opportunity in your life, it could be He is trying to speak to you through it. Maybe He has brought a chance to do mission work in your life, but you are ignoring it because you are afraid and don’t want to leave the comfort of home.

Choose today to listen to God. He truly knows what is best. We don’t need to walk past a door if He opens it. Instead, we must walk into the opportunities God has blessed us with and trust Him. This opened door could be the beginning of a new stage of life where you grow more in your relationship with Him. Acknowledge His voice and try not to miss His kind, caring, and loving words.

5. He Is Calling You to Join a Local Church

The body of believers is known as the church. While physical, individual churches are not technically the same as the church, as stated in the Bible, they are essential for our Christian walk. God might direct you to join one if you are not currently involved with a local church. Go to Him in prayer and ask Him to lead you to the right church. Unfortunately, many churches don’t teach the correct doctrine and lead people away from Jesus.

This is why you must pray before going to a church and extensively pray before joining a church. God wants you to be involved with a local church, but He does not want you to be involved with a false church. If you are unsure about joining a church yet, know that this is okay, but try to listen to what God tells you. Maybe joining an online church or getting involved with a friend’s church is what God is leading you to today.

6. The Word is Speaking, But You Aren't Responding

We cannot ignore the fact that we can read the Bible, go to church, and be involved with other believers, but we are still not responding to God. This is more common than people think. If we find ourselves in this predicament, we must practice patience, attention, and focus. We no longer need to do these spiritual disciplines mindlessly. We need to pay attention and listen to His Word.

Being changed by the Word will result in doing the right thing. James, the half-brother of the Lord, tells us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22). This is the natural result of listening to the Bible and applying it to our lives. It will be life-changing.

Listening to God is crucial to growing, developing, and improving our relationship with Him. If you have missed God’s gentle whispers, turn to Him today. Make a resolution to be more sensitive to His words. This cannot be a short-term resolution; it needs to be something that you continue throughout your life. Just as God never stops speaking to us, we never need to stop listening to Him.
