6 Simple Ways to Bring the Bible into Your Family's Daily Life

It can be challenging to bring the Bible into your family’s life without feeling as though you’re force-feeding or pushing it on your children. But whether you start young or in your middle years, there are ways to make Scripture unique, needed, and, yes, a discipline.

Let’s explore some ways to bring the Bible into your home:

1. Begin Each Week with a New Verse

This can become a challenge for each family member to memorize it by the end of the week. Depending on the age of your children, you could even make little contests or keep charts with how many verses are memorized, etc. For older kids, it is the challenge that keeps them invested. But creating the discipline to hide God’s Word in your heart is always a good place to start.

2. Use Scripture in Family Prayers

If you have regular prayer time together as a family, you can teach your children how to incorporate Scripture into your requests and praises. You can practice prayer by reading a Psalm as a prayer. Or you can include Scripture into a request, such as, “Lord, you’ve instructed us to ‘be anxious for nothing’, so we ask that you give us that peace that passes all understanding . . .” Using Scripture can enrich our prayers in so many ways. It’s an excellent way for the kids to hear it and witness how it can be incorporated into our communication with the Lord.

3.  Don’t Be Afraid to Bring Scripture into Everyday Situations

Your child may be frightened as they go to bed. Sharing Psalm 4:8 with them, "In peace, I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." (ESV), can show them that not only can they have faith in the Lord’s protection, but He’s even provided Scripture to address fitful and fearful sleep! Another example may be when a child struggles with impending change or the unknowns of school. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a fabulous reference to remind them to trust the Lord with all their heart and to not lean on their own. It’s by applying the Word to our regular lives that help make it come alive and be honest!

 4. Affirm and Rejoice with Your Kids

You’ve seen all those reels of parents standing with their little ones and looking into the mirror, stating affirmations like “I am beautiful,” “I am strong,” and so on? Do this with your kids; only rejoice in the truth that comes with affirming Scriptures. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps. 139:14). “God has a plan for me” (Jer. 29:11). And, even better, have your children help you create the list of Biblical affirmations that can be recited and repeated over and over as they grow. What a great way to shift their focus onto the firm foundation of the Truth!

5. Encourage Bible Trivia

5. Encourage Bible Trivia

Taking a long car ride? Have a family game night? Bible trivia is the best and so much fun! The kids can learn everything from books of the Bible to Bible characters, Bible stories, and Bible truths! There are multiple options of Bible trivia accessible online, via apps, board games, and even carry-along trivia cards for the car. Sometimes, turning Bible learning into fun can help the truths of Scripture take root in your children’s lives.

6. Have a Night of Bible Charades

Yes, it’s another game option, but the little kids will love telling Bible stories for the rest of the family to guess. It may not be a specific Scripture verse or passage that you’re helping them learn, but learning from the faith and life lessons of various Bible stories and characters is equally important. Watching your children try to guess, the silly antics, and the family bonding that can take place during a game like this will keep Scripture in your family's circle and encourage organic spiritual growth in your children.

There are other ways to incorporate the Bible into daily life, too. Hang decorative verses in your home, play music that sings Scripture into your environment, include Bible verses on little note cards in your kid’s school lunches . . . The possibilities are endless, and when Scripture becomes a regular and natural part of your life, you’ll find all of the family may begin to gravitate to the treasures that it holds!
