1. Praying – Talking to God

Pray in Scrabble letters

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to fight anxiety and find peace. When you lay your burdens before God and trust him to help you, you can experience peace in any circumstances. Philippians 4:6-7 advises you to pray about everything that concerns you: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer changes your perspective so you can focus beyond your circumstances to God, who can always help you manage them well. Prayer is more than just asking God for things; it’s a conversation that builds your relationship with God. If you set aside dedicated time each day to talk to God, you can become more aware that God is constantly with you, ready to help you.

Some people find structured prayers helpful, while others prefer spontaneous prayers. God has given you the freedom to pray in whatever ways work best for you. No matter your style of prayer, God will hear and answer your prayer if you pray from your heart with faith.

Pray for others, as well as for your own needs. Interceding for family, friends, and even strangers will send God’s love flowing between you all. That will encourage you while you’re helping others by praying for them.

Prayer also strengthens your trust in God. Even when you don't see immediate answers, praying enables you to develop patience and learn how to rely on God to answer in the best ways and at the best times. The more you pray, the closer you’ll get to God. Then, you’ll see that your prayers will become less about changing your circumstances and more about transforming your heart to align with God’s will. Through this process, you’ll develop a more profound sense of peace, confidence, and hope, regardless of your challenges.

2. Meditating on Scripture – Listening to God

Biblical meditation lets you decide what matters to God

Romans 12:2 encourages you: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

When you meditate on scripture, you replace lies with truth in your thoughts and emotions. So, schedule some time each day to reflect on God’s Word, letting it give you a fresh perspective.

Meditating on scripture is different from secular mindfulness techniques. Rather than emptying your mind, biblical meditation involves filling your mind with God’s promises. You can memorize Bible verses especially helpful for you and repeat them in prayer. You may also consider journaling about their impact on your life. When you make this a habit, scripture will anchor your life, pointing you to God’s perspective. That will give you the guidance and encouragement you need in any situation. You can meditate in the morning to start your day with peace, in the evening to relax, or at any other time that works best in your schedule each day.

One powerful method of meditating on scripture is the “lectio divina” approach, which involves reading a passage slowly, reflecting on its meaning, praying about it, and thinking about how to apply it. As you meditate on scripture, you’ll develop a deep connection with God that will help you be mentally resilient. Meditation's beauty is that it allows you to pay attention to God’s voice in this noisy world. As you focus on God’s Word, the Holy Spirit will make the words come alive and show you how to apply them to your life.

3. Singing Worship Songs – Experiencing Joy

Worshipping God by singing to him is a powerful way to lift your spirit and refocus on God’s goodness. You can find strength and joy when you praise God even during hard times.

Psalm 95:1-2 says: “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”

Worshiping through song reminds you that God is more significant than your struggles and helps you connect with God personally. Music can powerfully affect emotions; when you use your voice to worship God, you can feel God’s presence with you.

You can sing worship songs anytime and anywhere – in your car as the radio plays, at home during your devotional time, in church with your congregation, and more.

Feel free to use any style of worship music you prefer – hymns, popular songs from Christian artists, or something else. You can even praise God spontaneously by simply singing whatever comes to your mind. No matter where you sing to God, you’ll change your focus from problems to praise. You'll be confident despite anxiety when you sing and feel God’s presence. You’ll find that you don’t have the space in your mind for worries because you’ll be so focused on God’s power.

4. Practicing Gratitude – Focusing on the Positive

A thankful heart is healthy. Practicing gratitude changes your perspective from what you don’t have to the blessings God constantly gives you. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, the Bible encourages you: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Keeping a gratitude journal or thanking God in prayer daily can encourage you, improve your mood, and relieve stress. When you intentionally focus on what you’re grateful for, your brain rewires itself to notice what’s good rather than dwelling on what’s bad in your life. This can significantly strengthen your mental health.

When you’re grateful, you can see how God is good in any circumstances and how God is constantly at work in your life. One compelling way to become more grateful is by keeping a gratitude journal. Every day, write down three blessings you’re thankful for. These can be small, everyday blessings – like a beautiful sunrise, a kind word from a friend, or the ability to enjoy a meal. Over time, as you practice this, you’ll start to recognize the abundant ways God provides for you each day. Fresh doses of encouragement from practicing gratitude daily will boost your mental health, no matter what circumstances you’re going through on any particular day.

5. Helping Others – Finding Purpose

One of the best ways to overcome discouragement is to help others in need. Service not only blesses the people you’re helping; it also helps you by giving you fulfilling opportunities to live into your purpose

Galatians 6:9-10 reminds you: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, let us do good to all people as we have the opportunity.”

When you focus on serving others, you change your mindset from self-centered worries to Christ-centered compassion. Helping others empowers you to experience the incredible power of God’s love flowing through your life and into other people’s lives. Jesus modeled the power of serving others, and he says in Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” You can help others in many different ways – from volunteering at a local charity to listening with love to someone in distress.

Simple acts of kindness, such as preparing a meal for a struggling neighbor or writing an encouraging note, can bless others while strengthening your sense of connection and purpose. Another powerful benefit of serving is that it strengthens your faith. When you step out in service, trusting that God will use you to make a difference, you experience. Acts 20:35 states, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” By helping others regularly, you can benefit your own mental and spiritual health as you benefit other people.

6. Resting in God’s Presence - Embracing Stillness

In today’s rushed and stressful world, taking time to notice and rest in God’s presence is vital for mental and emotional well-being. Jesus prioritized rest during his earthly life, and he says in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Many people feel pressured to stay constantly busy, believing productivity defines their worth. However, God calls you to slow down and rest by trusting that he is in control. Resting in God’s presence also involves solitude and silence. In a world filled with noise – from social media, news, work responsibilities, and more – it’s easy to lose touch with God’s still, small voice.

Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16). Taking even a few minutes each day to sit in silence before God, breathing deeply and focusing on God’s presence, can help you experience God’s peace

Another way to rest in God’s presence is through reflection and surrender. Sometimes, carrying burdens never meant to be yours can exhaust you mentally.

Psalm 46:10 reminds you: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

When you truly rest in God’s presence, you let go of the need to control everything and trust that God is in control and will work everything out for the best. This surrender can relieve you of the heavy burdens of stress and anxiety. Resting in God isn’t passive; it’s active. When you rest in God, you cooperate with him to bring renewal and revival to your life. Rest helps you create space for God’s healing presence to restore you from the inside out.

7. Paying Attention to God’s Wonder – Feeling Awe

Pursuing God’s wonder regularly will inspire you with awe, expanding your perspective so you notice and appreciate God’s work in your life. Instead of worrying about your challenges, you train your mind to focus on God and the excellent work God is doing. This fresh perspective can significantly strengthen your mental health. So, pay attention to God’s wonder every day. The more you do so, the more your mind will be refreshed.

There is so much wonder around you that finding it will be easy once you pay attention.

Psalm 65:8 states: “The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.”

One compelling way to discover God’s wonder is by exploring God’s creation. Every part of nature reveals something remarkable about God, who created it. When life feels overwhelming, step outside and immerse yourself in nature. That can help you see beyond your immediate struggles.

Seeing how vast the sky is, admiring the details of a beautiful flower, or enjoying the sound of birds singing can all remind you that a good God is in control. Recognizing God’s presence in creation shows that he is both powerful and personal. God’s wonder isn’t limited to nature. You can find it in people, art, science, music, and more. Finding and enjoying God’s wonder in the world around you will inspire you with the hope that it will boost your mental health.

In conclusion, your mental health matters to God, and you need to take good care of it. Spiritual disciplines can strengthen your mind in significant ways.
